RE - Color Trackball
I do not believe that the Blackberry 8800 has the ability to change the color of the trackball like the 8100. Don't quote me on that though.

i think if you disassemble it and with a sharpie, color the white LED whatever color you want, then it should work...with that said, i don't know how to disassemble it etc., but i'm 99% sure there is a way to color the trackball

The only device that has the colored led's under the trackball is the Pearl. The 8800, 8830, and the 8300 do not have the colored led's. You can, as the above poster said, remove the trackball and color the white led with a sharpie. Not sure I recommend that method as I don't know what that does for your warranty.

Just a thought here...
Why is it necessary to disassemble the trackball? You're already going to muck it up a bit by sharpee-ing the thing, why not sharpee it in tact? You may have to do a second round, but I'm sure it would work.

Uh...I don't think it's a good idea to color the ball, itself, with a sharpie.

there is no program to change the 8800, its only for the 8100. but i think you can change the color with a marker! try taking out the trackball and coloring the light under it! that has been done with the 8100, im not sure about the 8800. good luck!

Someone posted to place a small piece of scotch tape on the led and color that with a sharpie. I can't see any harm in that. If placed directly on the led the ink melts over time and that can't be good for the led.

I have seen numerous posts on this issue, especially one with detailed instructions about how to take your 8800 to bits and colour the light. Is it just me or does anyone else find this whole subject ludicrous? Let's potentially wreck our phones so that we can have a different coloured light on the track ball. Come on guys. Get a grip.

To each his own.. why slam on people because they want to customize their phone? Some of us like to have things that stand out a bit more. I understand it might seem ludicrous to take it apart, but just the same to clean the track ball just a few more steps and you can have it light up a different color.

It's very easy to slap a coffee can on your car instead of a tail pipe you still shouldn't do it.

Re -
Just leave it as is. If something does happen and you need to take it back to your providers retail location, and they see it "improved" it may very well void any warranty that you are entitled too, plus I see some long term performance degradation from the trackball by doing this.

Quite True....easy enough to remove the tape, though, before going in or sending it back.

If you simply placed a piece of tape and then colored the tape, what possible degradation of the trackball could occur?

I don't see it either, not sure how tape / sharpee markings would degrade the trackball unless the tape had some sharp edges and rubbed against it which I doubt.

Actually...I am seriously considering coloring my trackball green and putting on some Miami Ink tribal "phone-tattoos" also to really make my 8800 stand out in my workplace. Maybe do some mods to make the keypad blink when I recieve an incomming call...or to change the keypad light color to pink or blue. That would be hot...wouldn't it?

Hopefully the tape won't lift up and start sticking to the rollers and trackball. That would be a mess.

.
Actually The Blackberry 8800 and the Curve does have color LED under the trackball! Handango offers a program that changes the trackball color! Its made specifically for the 8800 and Curve series. Also I had it confirmed by a customer service rep at RIM.
e-Mobile color Pearl <a target="_blank" href=http://www.handango.com/blackberry/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1181&osId=1014&ji d=67F1C143522D5A7679X4253ECXF21B1C&platformId=5&pr oductType=2&productId=213326§ionId=6593&catalo g=40&topSectionId=6593> </a>

According to the maker of this app a little while back, the only thing it could change on the 88xx series phones was the color of the LED, not the Pearl as well.
