910 model users errors when using 7290's

We are running BES 3.6 on Exchange 5.5. Our users all have the 7290 blackberry model that synchs via USB. Previously some of our users had 910 models that synched via serial cable. The old 910 users have this problem with the 7290's where the handheld is not detected in the desktop manager software. Have you seen anything like that?
I've tried everything I can think of (re-installing the software, different versions, cleaning out every RIM entry in the registry)
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the old 910 models because the users who got 7290 models straight away don't have this problem.
any advice ?
