differences between 8700c and 8700r ??
Please Login to Remove!
what is the difference between the two other then one of them is locked to Cingular / Rogers and the colour of the device? everyone seems to want the 8700r??
I just bought an 8700c on ebay, I will unlock it to use it with Rogers but then i'm off to europe in 2.5 weeks..so it'll be used on another carrier anyways.
Finally, since I'll be originally putting a Rogers SIM for the remainer time that I'm here would it be adventegeous to load the Rogers BB load for the device instead of the cingular one? is there a point to-do that? I will be putting another SIM later on anyways in 3 weeks time.
Thanks!

Physically, the only difference is the color of the casing (I have both). I am on Cingular but use the Rogers load because it is more current and has a few minor bug fixes. So I would load the Rogers firmware and go off and enjoy.

Caution
There must be at least some other technical differences.
I bought on eBay a battery that the seller claimed was suitable for 8700 and 8700c, and equivalent to the C-S2 battery.
My 8700r has a C-S2 battery but the one I purchased wouldn't work with it.
Long story, short. Paypal is getting me my money back.

They both require a locked type battery that has the RIM brand. Third party batteries or older RIM batteries will not work.

Did the "equivalent" battery have the Blackberry trademark and C-S2 marked on it? Somewhare in the RIM documentation I have seen a warning concerning non-authorized batteries causing problems. Apparently there is some special technology in the 8700 batteries. This is directed more at others that may be tempted to buy "equivalent" discount batteries that at you. You've already learned that lessen.
Hope this helps.

Caution - Part II
Here is what the seller said about the battery I bought:
"Brand New; Non-OEM...Replace Your Current Battery, Or Use As A Spare
Compatible To The RIM Blackberry C-S2 Battery
Rechargeable, With No Memory Effect
Advanced Lithium Ion Technology Makes This Possible
NOTE: Fully Compatible With The RIM Blackberry 7100, 7100i, 7100g, 7100r, 7100t, 7100v, 7100x, 7105, 7105t, 7130, 7130e, 8700, 8700c Cellular Phones."
Here is what his newer listings say:
Brand New; Non-OEM...Replace Your Current Battery, Or Use As A Spare...Rechargeable, With No Memory Effect
Advanced Lithium Ion Technology Makes This Possible
NOTE: Fully Compatible With The RIM Blackberry 7100, 7100i, 7100g, 7100r, 7100t, 7100v, 7100x, 7105, 7105t, 7130, 7130e, 8700, 8700c Cellular Phones."
He has removed the reference to C-S2.

Well, it sounds like he's still mis-representing the facts. The 8700c requires the C-2S. It's the only one that RIM says works. Checkout the 8700 accesories at www.blackberry.com.
Hope this helps.

Perhaps a complete newbie question (coming from Symbian/ MS PocketPC background):
Is it possible to flash a 8700r with 8700c software and vice versa provided that the phone is unlocked?
Thanks, Sabesh.

Can you point out what the "fixes/differences" are between the Cingular and Rogers firmware? Can a Cingular user download the Rogers firmware into the 8700c and expect it to still work well within the Cingular network? And lastly, where can we find it if it'd work well?
Thanks so much!

Can anyone tell me where I could purchase an unlocked BB 8700r. I am with Cingular and I could get the 8700c but I prefer the look of the all black 8700r.

You don't have to have an unlocked unit to use Rogers firmware on a Cingular unit or vice versa. The 8700r is very dark blue, not actually black.

barjohn, you seem to have knowledge of everything going on. would you happen to have a source that could unlock the 8700r? I've tried GSMLOCKER which couldn't provide a code and everytime i contact rogers, they tell me that they can't unlock it (as of July, 2005). i don't mind paying whatever it is they're going to charge.

Thanks for your Help.

I recall back when they first came on the market that there were threads talking about the fact that Rogers charged $250 to unlock the phone. I don't know of any source other than Rogers. Of course I have not looked for one either.

Does this mean that if I purchase a LOCKED 8700c and load it up with the Rogers O/S I will be able to use it on the Rogers network? Thanks, Sabesh.
