Ive read through this forum looking for this answer, and google has been no help as well...

All this talk recently about VZW's 4.5 OS and how it "unlocks" the GPS functionality got me thinking when I read that some people have mentioned "some 3rd party apps" aside from BBMaps work with GPS as well. We all know full well that the beast that is Google Maps doesn't play nice with VZW's GPS, but what does?

If there is another third party app that you know of that has working GPS on a 8130/8330/8830/9530 on VZW with OS 4.5, could you post it here? I'm quite interested to know.

I have read that even with OS 4.5, ONLY BBMaps and V-navigator work. I may be wrong. You still need a Bluetooth puck for more apps to work.

From what I've read, and I don't keep up with the features Verizon decides to cripple, they unlocked GPS for the Storm only. They plan to unlock GPS on other Blackberrys and WM phones soon.

Again, you'll have to google or someone else may chime in here.

Its actually on all the berrys with os 4.5. My 8130 can find 13 satelites with BB maps.

From what I've seen those without the Storm can now use BB Maps with 4.5 and that's it. The Storm users seem to be able to use other GPS apps. Hopefully VZW users can clarify.

I have a pearl on VZW and that is correct. Only VZ nav and BB maps are available without a separate puck. The storm is the only BB on Verizon that allows other apps to use the internal gps.

I have a curve with OS 4.5 and the problem isn't the software it is the gps receiver. I bought a gps bluetooth receiver puck on ebay for $30(bt 359). I can now go on google maps and it will track me within 3 meters in a downtown setting. I can also use the 3rd party receiver with BB Maps. This particular receiver will work at the same time I'm connected to my bluetooth headset.

gahhh. Google just came out with a new GMaps for the storm specifically that allows it to use gps.

id call that a nail in the coffin for 8130, 8330, and 8830 users.

Wait, you mean the new 3.0.2 unlocks the GPS for Google Maps to use? Even on a BB Curve?

Nope. Its just for the storm. Us pearl and 8830 and curve users are in the dark. Probably for good from the looks of things. I've resigned myself to never having google maps GPS.

I keep hearing about people having a bluetooth "puck" for GPS purposes. I am a bluetooth newb. What is a puck? Is that an external receiver for GPS or something? I search "bluetooth GPS puck" on Amazon and get nothing. Anyone have recommendations?

PUCK is a separate, small gps which uses Bluetooth (bt) to communicate with the BB. They are generally about the size of a electronic car door opener.
