When I used a Palm pda, I could hide data by marking the individual pieces of data "private". That way, if I lost my Palm, the secure info (account #s, passwords, etc.) would be safe. I had to enter a password in order to show all data. Is there a way to do something similar with info on my BB?
I can't load sensitive data without fear of losing my BB.

You can password-protect the entire Blackberry, but not individual apps or individual memos.

Go to Options > Password and set one. And remember it! If you forget it, there is no hacking or bypassing it! Blackberrys are very secure, a big selling point. You will have to wipe your BB and start from scratch if you forget your password.
You can set a time length for timeout until the BB locks and requires the password. Mine is set to one hour. This provides me with security in case I misplace my Blackberry and doesn't get too intrusive, so I'm not required to unlock it every 5 minutes. YMMV.

You can use password keeper for passwords, login, and account information. It's password protected independent of the device password.

Also consider robolock for the ability to lock the device if it is lost and wipe the device. You can also send a message popup and have the phone call a number.

Thanks, Rambo! I actually tried that when I had my Pearl (or was it my Curve?) and when I entered the password, it did not accept it! Had to wipe the phone. I know it was the correct password. Very aggravating. I've been reluctant to try that method again. Luckily, I had just backed up my BB. I was hoping there was software developed for this purpose. I can't be the only one who ditched a Palm and phone to get a combo phone/pda. Thank you, anyway!

Strange. I've used the device password for many years on many different BB models without any issues. Make sure you're aware of whether or not you're entering alpha characters or numbers/symbols. Passwords are text fields and you aren't entering numbers/symbols unless you hold the Alt key. On a similar note, if your password is alpha characters then make sure that the Alt Lock (or Caps Lock) isn't enabled when entering your password. However, before allowing you to enter your password incorrectly 10 times (and wipe the BB) it should force you to type "blackberry" in clear text to verify that there isn't a keyboard or other issue.

Don't forget about 'content protection'. That is a vital option that encrypts all the data once your phone is locked. (You must turn on the password with content protection.) You will notice a lock appear on your screen, when the phone is locked but the lock remains open, the data is in the process of being encrypted. When the lock closes, the data is encrypted.

I tried to wipe my pearl using JL_Cmder. it asks for password. after I reset it and load a new OS, the password was still there! is there any way to bypass the password? have also sensitive data and can't take a risk!

Content protection might be a bit of over kill for a person device, Content Protection will encrypt everything that is running actively, this way is someone was to take you BlackBerry apart and get to the active memory it would do them no good.

That's one way of looking at it, I had content protection enabled for a little while, but it interferes with BlackBerry Messenger, Media Player, and overall performance of locking/unlocking so I disabled it from mine, just didn't feel like the ends justified the means.

Also with Content Protection Enabled you can enable memory cleaning and it won't disabled itself after a battery pull, that will clear the certain key stores and etc.

Not sure if it is the same as on a Curve, but try:

Options > Media Card> Encryption Mode

Set it to one of the options there. Right below that is the option to encrypt media files like pictures as well.

Also you have 2 different types of encryption password or device.

If you set it to device then the encrypted files will only work on that device.

Password will encrypt them with your password.

Don't know if its still around but when I had used password encryption on media files, when I unlocked my phone the media player would stop the current song, and I had a problem with the video recorder.

Don't know if that's still an issue nowadays though.
