I'm not around as much as I used to be, but lately I've seen some long time members (and some recent additions) not being so nice to the new folks.

I'm all for encouraging people to search for their answers first (and they should), but there have been quite a few answers lately with replys that are just 'have you tried searching'? Back when I was a mod (in the 'olden' days) I tried to instead give people the search terms that would help them find their answer and/or provide the search terms and a link to one of the threads.

Then again, maybe I'm getting soft in my old age.

I think it is six of one, half dozen of the other.

When I started on BBF, there were less users here and those present seemed more knowledgeable and/or willing to do some research first.

One of the downsides of BBs hitting the mass market is that we have had an influx of new users, SOME of whom really make no effort whatsoever. The do not search, they do no background reading, and their posts are badly written with very little effort. In those cases, a lot of peeps who spend hours and hours answering posts do get a little frustrated with them, but I can understand that

But it's still nice etiquette IF you are going to offer the advice to search, to go the extra inch and offer a clue where and what terms to search for. An extra mile would a specific link. We encourage either.

I totally agree. I tend to search BBF and if that fails, BTSC, and post the link.

I'm just saying I see where frustrations come from on all sides.

Yea, I know it gets frustrating, but why bother even posting "Did you even search?" if you're not going to help (even an inch, like Jsanders said).

Just skip the entire thread if you're (and I don't mean you) not going to even try to help.

I know I am guilty of telling new members to search. I always try to make an effort to post a link.

I try to post a link if it might be an obscure thread, but if its as easy as a signature line No I am not going to help. But I opened the thread so I had to say something. And the past few links I have posted have gotten pissy rebuttals from the poster because it didnt hold their hand through the whole process or it was a dead faq

I thought this thread could use a bump...
