Default 8700c reception

Please Login to Remove!

There are times when my 8700C will not have service and another BB (mostly 7280/7290) will. Also, today while driving my BB went from no service straight to 4 out 5 bars. I've read here that the majority of 8700 owners say their reception is better. Any ideas? Thanks.

mine has had the same problem. I will go from having great service to having it search for service right back to having great service in the matter of seconds without the device even moving. I dont know if its a defect in my device or maybe b/c i've dropped it one too many times or what but i'm receiving a new one and i'll see if it still does it.

Please keep us all informed on what you find. If this turns out to be an issue I will bring it up to RIM. If it is only a few defective units I will write it off to teething problems inherent in bringing out any new product.

Could this be a problem with the 4.x OS? I know my Nextel 7100i has a severe problem with dropping/acquiring the signal in a fringe area. It seems like if I spend any amount of time moving in and out of coverage that the BB7100i has a VERY difficult time adjusting and frequently shows me service / no service -- even when I'm on a call. I think this has been a reported issue with the 7100i and am wondering if it extends to other 4.x OS devices?

My RAZR always had that problem. But then of course, Moto sucks.

I live in an area that has known strong and weak reception areas for Cingular, and the 8700c is at least as good in all of these areas as my Razr and previous Treo 650.

The 8700c reception is quite good, even in marginal areas around Boston. One thing to remember....GSM is designed to idle at the minimum power needed to maintain a signal (hence the better battery life over CDMA). You will notice that the signal indicator will spike up during an incoming call or when dialing outbound. Because of this, it's difficult to get a good feel for reception when the phone is idling...

Default 8700c dropping calls

I have also been having this problem for 2 to 3 weeks. Before I make a call, the display will say EDGE, then when the call drops, the display will say GPRS/GSM or still says EDGE. Then you get that tone, and a call fail display will appear.
Here is what I have found for me. During the daytime, I do not really have this problem (where I work, I do not get a signal in our warehouse). It appears to happen 8 PM PST to midnight. Durning these hours, the call can last from 2 minutes to couple of hours. I have called Cingular, and they show no problem areas in the west coast. They have recommended replacing the device, but last resort.

I started thinking on when this started happening, the only thing I did was to install the Software For BlackBerry 8700c(TM) BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.1.0.175 from Blackberry's website.

Has anyone else maybe had the same issue? Or am I way off base?

**Update** Cingular has agreed to replace my BB and should arrive tomorrow (1/17). Since my problem is reproducible, it shouldn't take very long to determine if this resolves my issues. I will keep yall posted.

**Final Update** My problem definitely was hardware related. After receiving my new phone I was able to not only use it from previous trouble areas but also use it where other 72xx BB's could not. IF you have a similar issue I recommend contacting your carrier and having the unit replaced while still under the manufacture warranty.

Good info. My 8700 running on T-Mo has been right up there with sound quality and reception. The only thing comperable is the T650, which with all of its issues, still has one of the best radios in my opinion.

Default No service on 8700g

I too have the problem with BB 8700g.
Once it lost the signal and it never comes back immediately even though there is a strong signal. It comes back on its own after 4 or 5 hours.

Restarting, taking out battery, etc... are not helping. This really SUCKS....
