I recently bought the 9700 (upgraded from 8900) i have a list of about 400 names in my address book. When I receive a sms or mms it only displays the number not the name, even though the sender is in my address book.

I have all numbers is address book formatted as xxx-xxx-xxxx.
If i change the format to xxx-xxxxxxx, the name will appear in the text message.
The only problem is that outlook will not let me format the numbers in this way.

Has anyone had the problem before?

What version is the operating system? There are a lot of reports of this issue with earlier v5.0 releases... try upgrading to the latest version by following the steps in the sticky post at the top of this forum. I'm running that .593 version and have no such issues... my numbers are formatted +1 (800) 555-1212 and sms, mms and phone calls all show the caller's name, as I expected it to.

My sister just bought 8310. She has the same problem - when receiving an sms, she just sees the number and not the name! Is there any solution for that?? Please help.

Thanks for the help.

I updated to the newsest OS, as shown on the sticky at top of this page. All SMS and MMS now show the senders name as well as number.

Thanks for reporting back... there are a lot of issues with some of the early v5.0 OS releases. Fortunately, RIM is squashing a lot of those early bugs. Glad that it worked out for you.
