I thought the 8800 was the only GPS-enabled "8800-series" BB to this point in time...

From there business web site...

Wireless Products

World phone and data roaming functionality
- CDMA and GSM/GPRS network compatibility
Full suite of wireless functionality-instant email, Web Browser, phone, organizer and text and instant messaging - all in a single integrated device
Media player with video and audio playback capability
****Removable MicroSD memory slot****
Bluetooth 2.0 support for voice-activated dialing and hands-free calling
Energy-efficient colour screen with auto backlight sensor
Built-in speakerphone

As far as their GPS is concerned they are in the same situation as Verizon... The 8830 GPS is Network dependant... They are probably not there just yet as you can see from the statement also from the same web site <<<<GPS Navigation capable with turn-by-turn directions – coming soon>>>

There is no diffence between the Bell and Verizon 8830 except for the version of code running on it....Same device... different carriers.

think before you speak pentagon- the bell is black and the verizon is silver.

my question was the diff between the 8830 and the 8800.

Charging for GPS navigation when free GPS software is available will be a hard sell for Bell. Many people will likely jump to Rogers if they want GPS for free...

I see they also plan to offer the Microsoft Live Messenger client--but for a fee as well.

Well... Since this thread is labelled "8830 now available at Bell online" and your question is "anyone actually seen this device yet?" and then go on to ask how's the build quality.... Wouldn't you agree that it was fair for me to assume that you were referring to the 8830 from Bell??????

I really didn't think you were referring to the color...

just playing with that penta. Thanks for your response. My concern with this device is whether it is made from the same cheap plastic crap that the 8800 is made from. If it is then I'm sticking with my 8703. If it's like the 8830 on Verizon though I think I'll make the jump.

Hi Bozo2007,

A small correction... "Telenav" on Rogers is 10 bucks a month. The 8800 GPS is active on the device and you can use it with Google Maps, Blackberry Maps free of charge (except for the usual data usage of course)... I personally use it with Wayfinder... No monthly cost from Rogers.

Hope this helps.

I remember when the 8700 came out after the 7290 and everyone thought the build quality was crap on the 8700's. It's turned out to be one of the best devices out there. Keep it all in perspective.

I am extremly please with it.. And it works very well with all GPS enabled software...

Keep in mind that the only software out there that will give you turn by turn directions will most likely cost you some $$$... As you have already found out Telenav on Rogers is $10/month... I went with Wayfinder because there is a one time fee ($100) and it's yours to use... no monthly recurring. There might be other sofware out there free or very cheap... If you look at Stinsonddog's GPS page Stinsonddog's Blackberry Tips you will find an abondance of excellent information on the subject!!!

It's great to use with Google Maps or Blackberry Maps... But there is no turn by turn..

maybe I'm just being overly critical, but I think the 8703 is a much better built device than the 8700. The case is sturdier and the keys are more tactile.
I'm hoping the 8830 for Bell has the same superior qualities.

As far as GPS goes, who needs it? Don't you guys have GPS in your cars? They are practically standard today and I never even use mine. I think it's just a gimmick personally.

ummm, not everyone drives BMW's. Some of us are still low paid cubicle workers and spending $200-500 on a phone with GPS would be much easier than spending my life savings on a large piece of steel wrapped in leather.

Unless you have used the GPS on the 8800 you shoudn't comment. The GPS on the 8800 is much more than a "gimmick". It is a very good mobile GPS solution. I travel frequently in Canada and the US and it works extremely well.

And no, GPS is not "practically standard". It continues to be a rather costly option on the majority of cars in the marketplace. I'll take a portable version which works in rental cars when I travel and day thank you.
