Defective BB

Hi all - anyone had any experience with T-Mobile and/or RIM and defective products?
My partner just had the 'hang up' button fall off her 7100T. She pulled it out of the holster and the button was gone.
She's only had it about 3 weeks so I called T-Mobile figuring surely they'd replace it as defective, but they say because she didn't purchase the extended warranty it'll cost $70. I was taken aback.
I've spoken with them twice now and they insist that because no additional warranty was purchased they can't do anything. Surely a button falling off after 3 weeks is considered defective.
I haven't yet called RIM to see what they say about it, but was wondering if anyone else had suggestions or similar experiences.
Thanks!
