Default using an iPhone with a BB data plan

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, I have an unlimited blackberry data plan on AT&T. I am looking to switch my SIM to an AT&T locked iphone 3g, but I don't want to constantly change my data plan with customer service. Will my blackberry data plan work on an iPhone without any extra charges to my bill?

Thanks,
Jared

Um, I think you should tell CS. Its the same price, so why not just give them an update?

They pro-rate the data plans. So if I'm in the middle of a billing cycle and switch to another plan, I get charged 30 for the new plan, plus XX amount for the amount of days I used the other plan...

Both the Blackberry and iPhone require unique data plans. You need to switch 'em each time you swap. If you were to go from a BB to a regular Nokia device, the Blackberry plan would work perfectly, giving you full MEdia Net capabilities. But with the iPhone you need their unique data plan. You'll have to call each time.

hey Rambo. thanks for the feedback. I'm kinda changing my question now though. the iPhone seems to work fine as of now, but do you think I'll be getting extra charges on my bill from the data usage? I have the unlimited BB data plan. clearly I'd be able to get any fees waived. just want to know what to expect.

thanks.

From what I've read, AT&T will notice you are now using the iphone and will transition your plan to an iphone plan automatically.

Been hearing that too. As I can't have an unsolicited transfer like that I ended up adding a family line with an iPhone plan. SO now I have an Iphone on Exchange EAS and a Bold on BES.

I have a blackberry data plan for my curve. I use that phone monday through friday for work. On the weekends, I pop the sim card into my iphone. No problems whatsoever. Data is data as far as att is concerned.

Two things you should know.

1. When you pop the sim card back in the blackberry, be prepared for an onslaught of emails that you have received since taking the sim card out. The RIM servers will hold on to them until they can deliver it to your phone.

2. The visual voice mail feature will not work on the iphone, as that requires the iphone data plan specifically to work. If you don't care about visual voicemail like me, than this is a non issue. You will still be able to call in as you would on any other phone though.

Everything works, from surfing the net, to getting texts, to making phone calls. I have been doing this for quite some time. My blackberry emails always work as soon as I switch back to it. ATT has never switched me to an iphone plan.

Yes, it works just fine (with the limitation you noted) and there is no technical reason why it shouldn't. With that said AT&T tracks IMEI number to data plan very closely (they've text messaged me within 30 minutes of the SIM swap)

If the OP wants to take the chance of having AT&T unilaterally swapping his data plan (and disabling their BB) it is their level of risk tolerance.
