usually you need to buy those sim cards in the country when you get there.

I recently went to the Czech Republic and got my sim card and international service from Verizon as that is where my 8830 came from. I doubt I got the lowest rates but the phone worked extrememly well in Amsterdam and in the Czech Republic with no issues for both voice and data. As soon as I was back in the US I went to Verizon and had the international service turned off.

The phone had to be reset after the sim card was installed.

Wunderbar's comment above is correct. I live in New Zealand, and the SIM card you buy here is a Vodafone 3G SIM Card, plug it into your phone and go!

Many airports have a cellular outlet in the airport, and in Europe you'll see Vodafone shops everywhere.

My NZ SIM works in most places in the world, certainly all of Europe, main exception is certain parts of US!

Have fun in Europa!

Sorry, don't mean to hijack your post but I also have a Sim Problem.

I bought a world phone along with a Travelsim card last year for trips to Europe. This year I have a BB 8830 and wanted to put the card in it.
I’ve already unlocked the phone (with the help of VZN)
When i put the card in and restarted the phone, the phone recognized the card but worked as my regular # and service.
I called the company that i got the card from and he told me that it only works on a GSM phone, Isn't an 8830 a GSM?

Do I have to change some settings?

Shouldn't it automataly switch over to the Sim card phone numer?

What am I doing wrong? Please help

If this card is really not good for this phone, can someone recommend one that is (I would rather a multi country)

Thanks so much

Wirelessly posted (7250)

Why do you need a 3G SIM? The 8830 is only capable of GPRS when abroad.

Email worked on my 8830 very well in Europe. It connected to Vodafone in Amsterdam and Vodafone CZ while in the Czech Republic. Again I was using the SIM I bought at Verizon and knew it would connect to the local Vodaphone carrier in the country I was visiting. I got four bars almost everywhere I went.

One fellow called me from a jobsite in Texas and did not realize that I was out of country until I told him. He was rather surprised as he thought he would have to use the country code to contact me.

If not too intrusive - what kind of costs were associated with your European usage from Verizon? Did you pick up a monthly cost or just use the phone on a pay-as-you-go basis?

I did the international option which reduces cost per minute/kb. I will find out actual cost when the bill comes at the end of the month. I was traveling for my company and they will pick up the cost. The use of the Verizon/Vodafone SIM card was for convience not overall cost savings. As I said earlier as soon as I was home I turned off the international service. If interested I will report cost when I get my bill.
