Default No internet if WiFi not available

Please Login to Remove!

I just started using 8350i, hoping I could use WiFi tools at times. But I seem to have found that if no wireless connection is available, then all web tools are useless. Cannot browse to web, cannot use emails, cannot do downloads.

My local wireless network has DHCP disabled, and users are assigned static IP addresses. There does not seem to be any way to manually enter the IP for the network connection. Can this be done?

I would have thought that "normal" communications were good, and the Wireless capability was an AddOn. Am I correct in concluding that "normal" Internet connections will not be available if a wireless connection is not available?

Using Sprint(Nextel) carrier, and it looks like my other Blackberry phone option is the 8330, standard model without wireless capability. Seems like a better choice, I can live without wireless network, but cannot live without emails. Any history I should know about?

Go to Manage Connections, Wi-Fi Options, Go down to your access point, press the Application Button and choose edit. Take the check mark out of automatically obtain IP and DNS address and enter what you need.

Wirelessly posted

I'm guessing here you mean no wifi, no browsing the internet. If that's the case then you need to go into your browser configuration and change the default browser from hotspot to internet browser. If you don't see that option, do a battery pull and try again.

Thanks Troy!

That allowed me to enter the IP, Subnet, Gateway, and 2 DNS values. I can now make web connection. Great.

But I still have the problem, that if I am not in area of WiFi, I will then have no web access, but the 8330 without WiFi can access web with satellite but 8350i cannot?

Do you not have a BB data plan?

And what do you mean "access web with satellite"?

To Kirrinjones

I saw Hotspot, but when I clicked on it, I had no other option to choose from. Could not enter anything manually.... will try again....Nope, nothing there but Hotspot Browser. Should I see two browser applications listed in applications, one for wireless and one for normal?

If I pull battery, will I lose address books, etc? How long will data be good without battery?

To DubDub

Yes, I do have a BB Data Plan. But could not find a way to connect to Internet if no Wireless network available, and the browser set up for Hotspot. (I should have said cell towers vs. satellite).

I can now use that browser while connected to a wireless connection thanks to TroyBrown's info. But it will be more likely that I will not always have access to a wireless network, so I am looking for normal cell phone type of web connections also. It sounds like I need an additional browser application?

Go to Options, Advanced, Host Routing Table, press the Application Button and choose register now. See then if you get a Browser icon. ALso in your browser config did you turn it to HotSpot from Internet? If so switch it back to Internet and should work on both.

I never see an Internet Browser, just the Hotspot.

On Host Routing I have three listed
IDEN 310 US [31601050] (in BOLD)
Wi-Di [60]
IDEN 310 US [31601050] (not in Bold)

I did Register Now on each of them. Got messages back from BB that device is registered.

Not sure what Service Books are, but have three:
WI-FI TCP/IP Browser
WI-FI TCP/IP Transport [WPTCP]
ProvisionIng [OTASL]

Also, this may be helpful, even though I can now browse with local WiFi, I cannot send email. Get error that "no message service configured".. Cannot find where to do that. I did create an account with sprint.blackberry.net to use BIS.

You said you have a BB data plan so it sounds like you need to re-send your service books.

PROBLEM FIXED!

Came back to provide feedback and say thanks for the help.
Was on line for almost 2 hours with Nextel Tech Support, got bumped up to higher level of support. Basic problem was that Service Books were not all there.

I only had three originally, now I have about 20. Also have more icons on "Desktop" and more options within those icons. Tech Support says that phone was not configured properly when purchases yesterday. The Data Plan was purchased but not properly coded so service books were not provided. Finally had to delete account with sprint.blackberry.net and create a new account with nextel.blackberry.net. So, I guess that even if Intel and Sprint are now "the same company", they are not quite the same.

Lesson learned: If signing up for Data Pkg from Sprint you should have many more than three Service Books listed. I have 27 listed, including the email account that was created when signing up for Blackberry Internet Service.

A few other clues:
GPS could not find satellites, that is now OK.
Now have option on browser for Internet and Hotspot. You guys called that one, as the cause of my first message.

So again, thanks for the help, I have a static IP on my phone, I can make Internet connections when wireless network is not available. Someday I hope I can help someone else as a way of payback.
