I get the same thing. It happens when you delete the vendor.xml file. Any chance of getting step by step instructions for hopless/helpless folks like us?

Got my 8100 Tuesday and unlocked it to Cingular yesterday evening (GSMPhonesource). I used the modified alx file (after deleting the vendor.xml) and am now very happily using the Vodafone Today Theme on my 8100.

Thanks guys, I LOVE this forum.

i notice in my modules that I have Plazmic Theme reader installed. I was under the impression that this didn't come installed on the 8100. Could this be the reason why i can't get and of jibi's vendor themes to show up? I followed the instructions to a T, everything restarted as it should have, just no themes but the stock ones show up in my themes list. HELP PLEASE!!

Not sure what's causing that error. I'm gonna download the modified .alx file right now and see if I get the same error or not.

clarification on this:

4 - Rename the BlackBerry.alx file located in your Installation Path (see above for full path name; varies for each handheld software installation).

what do you rename the .alx file to? whats the new name for it

5 - Download and extract the BlackBerry.alx file from the associated ZIP file for your handheld. This is listed above as BlackBerry.alx Download.

and do what with this file

i have done this mod on my 8700 but am not successful with my 8100. and i am getting the same error as everyone else

I never deleted the vendor xml file and like many of you I also got the same error. I reloaded the OS though since I had some issues with my 8100 and unfortunately the T Mobile Zen theme (where the icons are at the bottom of the screen) is no longer in my theme list now. Because of this I wanted to get it back so I downloaded the file jibi posted but I am getting the same error over and over. I've done this successfully with my 8700r many times but having no luck with my 8100 Pearl.

Same here. I get lost on the last step which tells you to update/upgrade my hand held. How exactly do I do that, there is not update/upgrade option on 4.2 software.

EDIT: Ok... tried loading the modified blackberry.alx file and am not getting error messages when loading. No go for me.

OK, I finally got it to work. Im not sure if this will help anyone that experienced the same problems that I did, but Ill post it anyways.

1) Remove all existing desktop manager software (or any other blackberry software) and REINSTALL. (I reinstalled the desktop software from the original CD)

2) Download the version 4.2 software for the 8100 from the following link and install...

http://www.blackberryforums.com/ring...-4-1-only.html

(I think thats the part that messed a lot of people up. I originally didnt install it because I thought it was just the desktop manager software)

3) Follow the instructions as listed in the above link... (IF you did the steps right you shouldnt be confused on any of the steps)

* EL Blackberry: If you follow the above directions a window should pop up asking if you want to update your software. Thats the trick. I was in the same situation as you because I originally did it wrong so I messed around with the settings forever trying to find an update button. *

Okay so I tried it and it worked and didn't work at the same time. When I use the .alx that was posted by jibi in the ringtone/theme forum I got the error on both mine and my wife's BlackBerries. However when I used the .alx file that was first posted in this thread by dc/dc it worked on both my BlackBerry and my wife's BlackBerry also. We know have the Orange, Cingular and Vodafone Today themes in addition to the ones that already came pre-installed on our 8100's.

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After reading Nitty's post I tried the same thing. I Took DC/DC's Blackberry.axl and used that instead and voila! When I opened my BB Desktop Manager it asked if I wanted to update! Sweet!! Thanks all, my 8100 is now officially perfect! Vodafone Today rocks! But the Orange and O2 themes are hanky!

Do the following and you'll be set, I'm starting pretty much where your #4 begins.

1. Make sure you BB Desktop Manager closed.

2. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8100-v4.2.0.42_P2.2.0.28 and rename the BlackBerry.alx to Blackberry.alx.old (you just wanna change the name to something different)

3. Download the ZIP that DC/DC provided, that contains the NEW Blackberry.alx.

4. Take the NEW Blackberry.alx you extracted and copy it to the same directory as the one I listed above (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8100-v4.2.0.42_P2.2.0.28).

5. Open you BB Desktop MAnager and you will see a prompt for updating, click yes and the rest is like taking candy from a baby...or a real old person.

This is all I did and it worked, hope this helps!

Default Thanks, the mod works! ALMOST!!!

I think I have come across someone mentioning that the voicemail indicator not working with the Cingular theme ...

I am having the same problem. Can any confirm that? Is there a fix for it?

Thanks in advanced.
