I will be installing the free version of BES on a server so that I can get my corporate e-mail on my BB 8700g. Can someone point me in the direction of the 'starting line' for beginners ?

Use the KB -look up BES 4.1 install

and you MUST follow the instructions to the letter. If you don't understand any part of what they are asking you to do, you should think twice about trying to install BES - It may be over your head.

I am familiar with network setup, I just wanted to get others feedback if there are specific things. The only reason I am doing this is so I can get email on my BB from my Exchange server. I used to have the BB Mail Connector setup, but it no longer works and I cannot re-install it.

Is there a better way to accomplish what I am trying to do ?

If you want full wireless sync of your whole mailbox, then no, there is no better way. If you just want your e-mail, use BIS. There are no tricks or gotchas other than following the instructions to the letter and as BBadmin says...permissions permissions permission.
