Angry Will Nextel ever offer true Text Messaging for the BlackBerry?

Please Login to Remove!

Will Nextel ever offer true text messaging for the blackberry and does anybody know why they don't now? It seems to me that text messaging is a pretty basic feature these days and I don't understand why its not available on the 7520.

I actually prefer email over sms, due to the fact that I can see whether or not the email is important by just looking at the subject. But to each his own.

Yeah I dont see the big deal about sms either but my daughter says thats because I am old. I prefer PIN and Email over it anyday. If I want to chat I use and IM program

But that has nothing to do with the question of whether Nextel will support text messaging. Which is not IM....

What do you mean that they don't offer "true text messaging"?

maybe someday they will, but as for now you are stuck doing [email address] until something "better" comes along. we do have one up on the competition having PIN messaging between BB's.

as was suggested in a thread I read on hofo, spam your friends telling them for further messaging please respond with [email address]., most friends understand.

What happens when you send a message to the teleflip address- does it change it into an SMS message and send it to the Nextel BB?

Also DAWG above says you can't SMS with Nextel BB's: does he mean you can't *send* SMS messages to non-Nextel wireless numbers (or for that matter any other Nextel wireless #'s) or that you can't *receive* SMS messages when someone sends a message to your [email address]?

Thanks,

-Marc

what will happen is the teleflip at the end will search out the carrier you are sending to if you do not now the email extension and then add it for you automatically. And I do not believe the page email will help you out on the BB.

Red face SMS- confirmed- thanks!

Thanks to everyone here for your comments. I just got a 7520. I've had a 7100g- which I liked, but the "sure-type" keyboard on that thing was driving me crazy. Also the 7100g slows way down in terms of opening messages and responding to menu commands- when you have a lot of messages on it. I really wanted a speaker phone so the 7520 was my only choice. We'll see how it goes.

I was able to confirm that you can receive SMS but not send- there's not even a menu option for it when creating a new message. Someone should invent a service that lets Nextel users enter a PIN that would convert it to SMS- wouldn't that be cool!

I noticed that others can send messages to me not only at the "...nextel.blackberry.com" address but also at the "page.nextel.com" address. The latter takes much longer to receive, I noticed.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

-Marc

I don't have a nextel BB yet, see http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=9252

This is one of my fears with going with nextels BB. I get alot of text messages/ pages to my I860 using [email address]. I need to get these messages and would like to be able to send messages to others phones by sending messages out .From what I understand this can't be done?

I'm on Telus's MIKE network using a 7510, but since telus and nextel are virtually the same, I can help you out.

You WILL receive the messages. There is no option to reply from the sms itself. You can still send messages, but it's done through the browser, and not through the phone itself.

You WILL NOT know who sent the messages though, unless they actually sign them. Thats what I told people who absolutely must send me a message to do: put "-name" at the bottom of the sms. In general I tell people to email me, and do not send me an sms.

This is the most annoying thing I've ever seen. WHAT IS THE POINT OF RECEIVING A TEXT MESSAGE IF YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHO IT'S FROM?

<rant> Well, that and the fact that Telus charges 15 cents for every sms you receive. No idea how nextel works. So if 10 people send me 10 messages each a day for 10 days, i'd be billed for $150 in text messages. This is just plain stupid. I have no control over someone sending me a text message, nor does receiving one do me any good since I can't tell who sent it!
