I'm running 5.0.0.423 on my 9700, and when I plug in the usb cable my Berry prompts me for my device password to activate mass storage mode. I enter it, the drive mounts, then the Berry prompts again for the password and the drive dismounts. It keeps going in this cycle. SOmetimes the drive doesn't have a chance to mount in Windows before the Berry asks for the password again.

I have the newest version of the desktop manager installed, and this is the first time I've had this problem. Any ideas? Is it just a bad OS?

I have the 9000 and I saw this problem with a certain (longer) USB cable I was using. The cable will work without problem for my 8310. But not with my 9000.

Now this is truly bizarre. This might be the usb cable that came with my 8900, but it's no longer than the cable that came with the 9700. I had it plugged into an external powered hub (which is where I've always plugged my Blackberry in). After reading your post, I plugged it directly into the side of the laptop - and now things work.

Really weird.

glad it helped.... and yes, I neglected to mention USB hubs are problems as well.
