Did you have any difficulty at all getting the assembly back together? I got mine apart no problem, tried cleaning the pearl (little success), but now cannot seem to get it back together. I'm sure it isn't broken in anyway, just having trouble getting it to lock back into place. Any suggestions?

Hmmmm...so the Pearl's trackball doesn't clean itself? (I hope it's not dumb to think it would...I know that my last phone, the Sidekick 3, apparently had a self-cleaning trackball. Or that's what the mods/programmers for Sidekicks said at hiptop.com when people asked if it was necessary to clean it, anyway.)

The Pearl will not clean itself. It will get dirty and need to be cleaned manually. I have had my BB for about a month now and I had one occasion where the Pearl stopped scrolling down (after I did SanFransico's LED mod which is awesome!) but all it took was applying some pressure around the silver ring to get it working right again. Since I have completely disassembled the phone I'm not scared to do it again, especially if it's just the pearl needing a cleaning, but I agree that RIM could've done a better job with using a material that doesn't collect as much dirt/lint. Perhaps a smooth marble-like pearl would be a better solution. I'll be waiting to see what the aftermarket does with this problem.

This is why you probably dont want to keep your pearl in your pants pocket. Looks just like the lint that comes out of the drier trap after you dry a few pairs of jeans
