I have a used LG CU500, and I am trying to sell it since I now have a BlackBerry. The prospective buyer is an AT&T/Cingular "blue" customer, and his SIM did not work in this phone. The two of us went into a new at&t store (NYC) to inquire about it, and possibly obtaining an unlock code, and the sales rep told me to contact customer support for that.

The CS rep I spoke to told me that unlocking a phone to use on another carrier was "illegal" and that if I did it, it was "against the law" and that he cannot provide me with an unlock code for the phone.

If anything, isn't there some sort of law now that states that unlocking a phone is legal? Comments and thoughts appreciated.

Its actually perfectly legal as of recently.....

Yep, it's perfectly legal. If you have a Cingular account they should be able to unlock it for you. If not, then you may need to use a 3rd party unlocking service. It runs on average $20-$60 depending on the phone

LG CU500 is a UMTS device or 3G if you will. If your friend doesn't have a UMTS SIM the phone won't work. The old sim cards do not work in 3G devices. Look on his SIM is there a fire ball with 3G in it? If not he needs to replace the SiM

Its is legal but at the same time is up to the carrier if they provide you the unlock code or not. Most of the GSM carriers have a Database were they can search the unlock code only with the Imei number. But as i said is up to the carrier if they give you the code or not and most of the carriers won't give you the code.

This is most likely the problem. It is an older AT&T sim, with just the globe on it. So even if the phone was unlocked, the SIM would still not work?

I wish all of CS would get on the same page. It is one thing if they cannot provide me with the unlock code if I dont meet their criteria (which I believe I do) but to tell me that it is illegal and there are laws against such thing seems terrible. I don't know how they get away feeding false information to so many people.

If they won't unlock it then just use GSM PhoneSource - When Only The Best Will Do. He is a reputable unlocker.
