rev A is a faster network, most likely it will be a firmware update to get on rev A once it's deployed it your area, like they did with the 7250 to access edvo...

I believe the chipset in the current BB's will not support REV A. firmware will not help. I am not 100 percent on this.

Problem is that the device can't really process the current evdo speeds so browsing is no faster than edge bberry. Great for tethering though.

Verizon is advertised Rev A with access cards.

Any update on whether it will be a firmware update?
I thought I read that it takes multiple receivers to process Rev a and requires a special chip?

There will be a Rev. A 'Berry probably a year after the HSDPA 'Berry comes out, which will probably be next year.

Rev A is currently being deployed and the cards are able to handle the speed. By the time they get the Rev A chipset there will be another faster version.

As some developments are occuring on the next couple faster versions.

A better "unofficial" way is to monitor the various rumor/industry sites like Blackberry forum.

It is well know that both Sprint and Verizon are rapidly deploying rev A to stop the continuing erosion of their user base to the more consumer-friendly, device happy AT & T.

Which is the same ARM926EJ-S + CDMA/EVDO system on a chip solution that the 8703e uses. And the 8703e can do EVDO Rev A.

So why can't the 8830? Does anybody know if this artificially limited in firmware?

My 8703e indicates 1XEV and I can achieve about 500-700 kbps down / 120 kbps up.

This may not be wholly on topic, but I also run a Wireless Aircard from VZW, which I just purchased and it is running Rev A. Can't speak to the handsets, but looks like the network is capable/operable in Rev A.

Probably not Rev A. But the speed really depends on several factors such as the connection, the device processor, device memory, distance to the tower and tower congestion. Also, voice has priority over data at the tower.

I got an upgraded data card a couple weeks ago and it is running Rev A as well.

Okay, after reading: Evolution-Data Optimized - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and the MSM6500/MSM6550 docs, this is what I get:

1X = 1xRTT = CDMA2000 rev 0 = not for data broadband
1XEV = 1x EV-DO = CDMA EV-DO = EV-DO rev 0 = CDMA2000 rev A = what I'm using when I tether as modem

Is this correct?

So, I should likely be able to achieve similar tethered modem transfer rates with an 8830 as I am now with the 8703e?

No. EVDO is an "upgrade" to the 1xRTT data network.

EVDO Rev 0 will provide 400-700 downlink and ~150 uplink - average
EVDO Rev A will provide 500-800 downlink and 300-400 uplink - average

The 8830 will be Rev 0, same as the 8703, so tethered speeds will be the same.

I'm using my 8703e and did a speed test at dslreports.com. I got 309 down and 124 up. I'm in metro Atlanta so I sould have a great signal. Should I be connecting at a faster speed?
