Area codes as best as I can tell (I am going by the ones the 611 rep said were tagged intl):
908, 219, 502, 260, 765, 808.
The interesting thing is that is appeared to happen on all sent texts starting on 12/8 that showed a phone number in the to/from column on the online page. Received texts from the same numbers and ones that showed as 'phone' didn't seem to be the issue. At the time I called he had 18 texts marked intnl and is now at 24 (same as last night). He's sent more than 6 texts since then so maybe something is fixed in the underlying system.
He didn't know of any of the recipients being on any vacation or being near one of the borders, and their replies weren't tagged as intl. I suspect all the texts were to other college students (that's why there is a large number of area codes) studying for finals next week. Since it affected all numbers after a certain time (and not just one number) I do suspect it was something related to a config change on the morning of 12/8, which may be fixed now.
I'm still watching to see if the count goes up again, and to see if they dissapear from the online page and I'm not charged on my next bill.
