I saw this the other day on somebody's iPhone and immediately knew I HAD to have it on my BlackBerry. Fortunately it's available right now from Starbucks for BlackBerry. It's not in AppWorld - only a direct download from Starbucks.

Once you put the app on your BB and link it to your Starbucks card you can:
1. See your card balance.
2. Refill your card from your BB.
3. Set up auto-reload.
4. Track card usage.
5. Add new cards.
6. Check out your earned rewards.
7. Locate Starbucks stores.

When you open the app it displays your balance and a button for "Pay". Selecting Pay brings up a bar code that can be scanned at the register to pay for your purchase, be it a simple drink or an entire load of coffee/mugs/snacks/beverages. It's just like whipping out your Starbucks card.

The only caveats I have found are:
A. That it works ONLY ON WIFI, so you have to be in the Starbucks store and connected to their WiFi network.
B. Not all Starbucks have the necesasry new scanners to accept the on-screen bar code.
C. To download the app you must get a download link from Starbucks via a 5-digit short code sms. My carrier, Sprint, blocks short code sms by default so I had to call and have it unblocked. Took all of about 3 minutes, but it's not automatic like App World.

It works fine for me and I don't have a Wi-fi device. I haven't used the pay function yet but it brings up the barcode. You can search for stores with mobile payment on the Starbucks site. In my area the Starbucks in Target stores have it. I will have to try this soon.

Maybe my firewall is blocking it from working on the cellular network.

Firewall disabled, so that's not it.

I just tried the app witout WiFi and after giving me a "network unavailable bb342" error message I re-tried it and it worked.

Just a heads up that this has been officially released by Starbucks. It was made available yesterday (Wednesday 19 Jan 2011). You can get it by visiting Starbucks Card Mobile on your device's browser.

And if you're having a problem with the in-app Store Locator not finding your location, I've written a quick troubleshooting how to. Its on my website but I've copied and pasted it here so no one has to leave their favorite Blackberry forum. :D



Own a Blackberry and just installed the new Starbucks Card Mobile but you're having problems with Store Locator finding your location? First, try using the in-app Store Locator closer to the Starbucks' window or door. Blackberry GPS seems to work better when there is a clear-ish view of the sky.

If that doesn't help, try this quick tip to make sure the GPS on your Blackberry is working properly:

• Go to Options, select Advanced, then select GPS
• Press the Menu (Blackberry logo) key and select "Refresh GPS"
• The message "Scanning for satellites..." will display. Be patient as this can take a long time

No luck? Make sure you didn't accidentally click "Deny" at the screen below.

The good news is if you did click Deny but did not select Do Not Ask Again, you will be prompted again to allow the application to access your GPS. Just select Allow the next time the above dialog comes up.

If that doesn't work, be sure to read the rest of the Troubleshooting Built-in GPS on Blackberry post over at Pinstack.com. That should take you from seeing this

to doing more of what you want; paying for your coffee even if you left that Starbucks card at home.

i was thrilled to read this....but when I went to download, the message was that my device was not supported .... although the 9650 was listed on starbucks web page as being compatible.

I've had a couple flirtations with Android phones and I was horrified to see Starbucks doesn't have this app for Android. It's out for the iPhone and BlackBerry of course, but to get it for Android you have to download a third-party widget.

The problems with the Android widget are:
1. it takes up 4 spaces on your home screen.
2. it doesn't update as frequently as the BB Starbucks app.
3. reloading simply takes you to the Starbucks website rather than handling the reload through the app itself.
