Default Messages?

My new Curve has two icons, one for messages and one for email. Is there a way to make the messages icon do just that and only display text messages? Right now both icons seem to show the same cache of messages, both email and text. Even with my Blackberry Alerts it's confusing.

The Messages icon is where all of your 'stuff' initially goes (messages, sms/text, phone calls). You can set it (under Messages -> Options) so that sms/text is separate (then you'll get an sms icon).

If you've set up a BIS email account, you also get a separate icon for each BIS email account.

Feeling really dumb: how do I "set" it? Where under Messages->Options?

Go to the Mail icon, hit the BB button (to the left of the trackball) and hit Options > then General Options, scroll all the way down to the bottom.

when editing your device's profile, is the "normal" setting permitting various ring tones? i have my various messages set for various alerts and ring tones. however, i couldn't hear any of them until i switched profile to "loud". i thought the "Loud" setting was to have everything louder versus "normal" which is more of a defaut setting for volume. am i wrong?

Yes, the "normal" setting should allow you to do alerts, ring tones and etc. Just try to review your settings. You may have a to do a battery pull if it still doesn't work.

Good luck!
