Default BES or no BES?

Please Login to Remove!

The IT dept at my place of work has BES with Exchange.
Everyone in the organization is moving from Blackberry's to Iphones except for me. I can stand them but thats another topic
Anyway, I just got a Bold and want to connect it to exchange server. I guess the first question is Can I connect to exchange and have content sync without BES? If so, then steps would be appreciated. If not...then first thing would like to know is if connecting to BES Requires an it policy or not?
If it doesnt, would appreciate help setting it up that way (Our IT has minimal knowledge of BES and asked me if I could find out how to do this they would do it) If IT policy is required, then how would they create a blank policy with no restrictions for my device.
Thanks and I appreciate your help!

You need BES for wireless PIM sync. (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, Memos)
If all you want is to get your email wirelessly, then you might be able to integrate your Exchange mailbox via BIS.

Is your exchange mailbox accessible via Outlook Web Access?

yes it is, I am aware that I can set up as a BIS account but email wont be inmediate. I could also forward to blackberry email. But..
How about no it policy, is it possible under BES?
Or creating a blank policy, is it too complicated?
Thanks!

You can't be on a BES and not have an IT Policy on your device.
Ask your BES admins to assign the 'Default' IT Policy to your device.
It is non-restrictive, unless the admins were careless enough to modify it.

It's also quite simple for any BES Admin to create a new non-restrictive policy and assign it to your device.

ok, so it should be simple, I asked as I know they have pretty much no idea how to use or configure BES and they have no intentions of learning

Then you're probably better off staying off the BES.
You're giving too much power and control to admins who can cripple your device and wipe out your data whenever they want to... or mistakenly press the wrong button.

One more q
Would desktop redirector allow wireless sync of contacts, calendar, memos etc only?
I am thinking of setting up a forwrding rule on the exchange server to my bb address and have desktop redirector only sync the rest

BES automatically installs with a "default" policy unless changed by the admins. This is a very non-intrusive policy. It allows you to use all functions of your Blackberry and all third party software. From your description of your IT admins, I would venture to guess they are using the default policy.

If you are currently using a Blackberry attached to this BES server, it is very easy to switch to your new Bold. On the BES Manager program, under your profile, there is an option to switch devices. The eaiest way to use this function is to simply connect your new Bold to the machine running BES and click on swich devices. After that, your Bold will be connected to your BES server with the same settings as your old Blackberry device.
