Dead 8830?

Hey All,
Someone I know recently bought an 8830 on ebay hoping that they could join the BlackBerry world for less. He brought it to me after he did an application load (the ebay listing indicated that the handheld had an error 507 present).
Appload was successful, but he can't get a mobility signal from his carrier. The device is the for the same carrier he's with (both are Bell). The signal indicator in the top right corner is an X. I've cycled the mobile network connection many times, I've pulled the battery many times, it just cannot get a signal.
I took it to a Bell store to see if they could get it to work, but so far, no luck. Any suggestions?

Not familiar with Bell, but is there a Verizon *228 equivalent on that carrier to activate the device? This would be after the request is made to transfer number to a new ESN.

Yes, they performed the ESN change without any issue but the BlackBerry still wouldn't get a connection to the mobile network.

i would try to wipe the device and reload the OS, sounds like something went wrong with the OS load the first time...
what OS is he currently using on the device?

That's what Bell recommended. So I suggested he use JL_Cmder to wipe the device and then, and then appload it. I Javaloaded it for him, then he apploaded 4.2.2.196 onto it.
We're both at a loss right now why it can't get a connection. As one of the previous posters indicated, is there a Verizon *228 equivalent on that Bell to activate the device

Do you know if the device ever has a signal. You said it was purchased off of ebay with a 507 error. I am wondering if there was an issue with the antenna to begin with?

No idea if it ever had a signal, but then again, when the paint on the undo button was almost worn off completely, I'd say it had one at one point.

ok, no he needs a BB data plan not a regular plan for regular devices, that may be the issue right there

I'm pretty sure it wasn't stolen as I used to work for RIM. I was on a 4 month co-op education work term and checked to see if it had been stolen, and it wasn't. My friend is thinking that there may be some kind of physical damage since neither of us haven't taken it apart.
But even if he didn't have a data plan, would it not get a 1x signal for voice at least?

no i dont think so... i believe with the CDMA carriers you will not get signal to the phone until the right data plan is on the account...

I checked in with him, and he said when they did the ESN change for his phone, they did add a BlackBerry data plan to it but when they couldn't get it to work, they changed the ESN again back to his old phone, which may be the culprit right there as Corey indicated.
Will get him to try it again.
