Default Get Email ONLY Upon Request

is there a way to have your email acount setup,
and instead of automatically having your emails forwarded to as they hit your account,
we'd choose when to retieve them,
so basically you would not get the emails on the blackberry till you request them?

yes its called take it back and buy a treo they do that perfectly. A bb is going to have it pushed to you unless you turn the phone off. or you have all the mail forwarded to a gmail account and you use the gmail app.

But isn't the whole point of the BB to receive email instantly? It's true "push" mail.

You could turn data services off when you don't want email, then turn it on when you want them.

why would we want that option when we buy the device so we can have instant email not have to go get it.

Thats like having a wife at home who loves sex but you go out to get it somewhere else.

ROFL. That's some crazy funny stuff!

Agreed - if you wanted a "pull" e-mail device, you could have bought a Windows Mobile phone.

If you are annoyed by the e-mail beeping during the day as they arrive at work, then you should learn how to use profiles on your device. Look for the button called "Profiles" and switch to the "Phone Only" profile during the workday - all day long, e-mails will silently arrive on your phone without annoying you. As you leave work, switch back to the "Normal" profile and the phone will start beeping as e-mails arrive.

Feel free to just leave it on "Phone Only" all the time if you just want to look at your e-mails at your leisure and couldn't care less when they arrive.

Options, Mobile Network

The guys above are right, just use your profile as intended and ignore the mail. If you turn off data, you lose all data services for any application (BBWeather, gps, etc). Might as well carry a pocket calendar.

You can turn it off at the BIS website, but barring that, the beer solution is probably the best!

You're asking for a BlackBerry to stop being a BlackBerry. Why did you buy one?

If you'd like to turn off data services, go to Manage Connections > Mobile Network > Data Services > Off. But really, go buy a Treo or something if you don't want your email to actually get to your phone.

The point of getting a blackberry is to get emails pushed to the device. RIM has developed their whole infrastructure based on that model. RIM does not want to store emails, just push them from one place to the device.

But having said that, you could just not set up any additional bis accounts and use the gmail app on the device to check your gmail account when you want. I don't know if yahoo has something like that.

Joking aside I can see a case for turning the push email off temporarily. The BB is a mobile phone and an email device. If I am overseas will email be pushed to the BB and would there be any additional costs for receiving email? If so could I turn off the push email to reduce costs and use the BB as a mobile phone only?

Not sure if you would incure any additional costs for receiving data overseas. As far as your second question, yes you can. Go to your profiles and change it to Phone only.
