Hi,

Just installed it...it is within 1700 meters (as it proudly displays). I notice the more rural the area, the less accurate it is. Has anyone else noticed this?

yeah, currently, I'm in a slightly rural part of Northern Virginia. It has me placed in the next town over, ha! 1700 feet my ass!

When I was in a more populated place, it had me placed within 5 blocks... I assume this works best in a real city. I'll be sure to test this in Boston, soon....

Talking "Damn, it follows you too?"

I made my lady download 2.0 to her Pearl. As we were driving around I told her about the My Location feature. I was trying to break it down to her, telling her that it uses cell towers to attain your location, explaining that it was like GPS but not quite: "for example, the blue dot won't track your current location as you're driving around like it does when you have GPS." And she said: "Um, it IS following us around." To which I replied: "Damn, it follows you too?" I was SHOCKED. I assumed you'd have to refresh your location by hitting 0 again to get a current location as you're moving around. You all may have already noticed this feature, but this thing kicks bootay.

Alas, as far as she could tell, the blue dot won't track your current location along directions that you had previously requested. Nor did I expect it to. Really, quite unbelievable for a free app that is still in beta.

Traffic seems to load up much quicker in this version on my 8320. Also noticed the GPS bug is still there, if using a bluetooth GPS puck and you don't have bluetooth turned on when running google maps, it will keep asking you to turn on your bluetooth.
You can fix it by going into the bluetooth GPS menu option and selecting "Disable Bluetooth" as this version gives a little more time between the nag screens.

Google Maps puts My Location as about a block away from where I actually am. funny thing is, the regular Blackberry Maps application puts my location at exactly where I am. Looks like Google Maps isn't using the gps, whereas Blackberry Maps is.

Anybody else having similar results?

I have a Sprint Blackberry Pearl 8130

For all of those people who show their location off. Can anyone verify that the location showing on the device is actualy a CELL TOWER. My point is that the location shown is actualy the tower that your blackberry is using.

So if this is true. Then there is no triangulation going on. Just cell tower location. If this was true triangulation then the accuracy would be better. Also for triangulation to work your blackberry would have to be talking to 3 towers at the same time. So it can cris-cross your location. In the current setup it only knows what tower your bb is talking to.

So if you are in the boonies your bb should show you a less accurate location because those towers usually have a longer/larger coverage vs. a city cell tower which are lower and more numerous thus closer to your acctual location.

Default Direct link to 2.0.0?

Hey

Can somebody post a direct link to the new 2.0.0 version of Google Maps (.jad or .jar File)? Due to no Data Plan and no Service Books I cannot use the BB Browser for OTA downloads.

I don't know how to get the direct download address for my Blackberry Pearl

Thanks in advance!!!

My results vary. Sometimes it seems to lock the tower, but then sometimes it seems to try to triangulate. Last night at home, it was locking on to a specific tower at times (which is quite a distance away - we're pretty rural) but then switching periodically to a location much closer (and more accurate) where there definintely is no tower. It was more inclined to lock on the tower, however. (Which I still find pretty cool - as then I have an idea of what tower I'm hitting at any given time.)

Either way, for me, this performance is more than adequate for my limited LBS needs.

If you can't do ota downloads, I'm not sure how this will help, but here's the direct ota link:

http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v2.0....GoogleMaps.jad

Replace 42 with 41 for OS 4.1 and 40 for OS 4.0.

Don't you really need the .cod file?

I cant confirm it, but that thought did cross my mind, that the program is simply locating the tower you're most connected to.

This is what I think. Even though I have no idea where any of the towers are in the Bronx. My theory (firmly rooted in conjecture and wild speculation) is that it always tries to triangulate. But that when Gmaps states "my approximate location to within 5000 meters" it is locking to one tower. And when it states "my approximate location to within 1700 meters" it's using triangulation. Just a guess. What do you all think?

This post would seem to defeat my theory (directly above).

Doubt it - unless towers are sitting in the ocean. That's where it often is showing my location. Right now, it says within 1700 meters, and the screen is blue. I have to press the "H" key to scroll left 20 times before the bullseye is on the beach.

Just had it compute directions to the beach - 2.0 miles is the distance off shore of this "tower".
