HSPA is effectively 3G (slightly faster)
a 8100 can only do 2G = GPRS.
So, no you would need a 3G BB.

Dont think the 9700 even does HSPA (probly can with an update) but another place says Tmo doesnt even have any HSPA handsets out

Yes the 9700 does HSPA.
Otherwise Bell, Telus etc who have a HPSA network (but still run their CDMA network), wouldn't be selling them.

By default or by firmware?

Was reading about tmo rolling out HSPA, but it specifically mentioned no HSPA handsets yet

Theory, by default.
Like i said, Bell who run a HSPA network would not be able to sell and use the 9700 otherwise.
If t-mobile hasnt implemented a HSPA network, thats the network problem, not the device.

Besides, the OP question was about using a 8100 on HSPA in canada on Virgin.
