Default newbie saying hello, prepare urself for a rant :(

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all, about a month ago i decided to go back to life with a contract mobile coupled with a brand new handset. It has been about 4 years since my last, and during my time on pre-pay the only smart phone i had was a windows based HTC touch pro diamond 2 something or other...

so my options.... i want internet brousing, (decent internet brousing. not like my HTC where its quiker to drive home and use my home pc with broadband) so instantly it seems im limited to a blackberry or an iphone. im now listening to reviews whereby there seems to be equal pro's and cons for each. one thing im nott so sure about is touchscreen, the htc was touchscreen and i didnt get on with it too well, especially as the screen didnt turn off as it was next to my ear, so i was constantly putting people on 'hold'. however both the blackberry (torch) and iphone dont seem to suffer with this. A physicaly keyboard tho is certainly desirable for me. So although iv got my heart set on an iphone, im sold on the new blackberry torch...

and im sorry to say, im really not getting on with it. the toggle/scroll button is awful, it barely ever goes where i want it to, and the internet brouser is even worse. the download speed is acceptable but once a webpage has downloaded the responsiveness of the handset is terrible for navigating around that page. so much so that you begin to wonder wheather the handset has recognised the action at all

am i the only one who is suffering with this? is it normal? iv checked for updates and it appears im up to date

rant over

by the way, other than these issues, i think the phone is brilliant. i just think id love the iphone more

If you bought a BlackBerry and your #1 criteria was web browsing, then you were misinformed. The browsing experience on a BB ranges from poor to barely acceptable. The iPhone remains a top choice for browsing. You should also note that carrier and coverage are major factors in your web browsing experience. My HTC Evo is lightening when using the browser. And a 4.3" screen doesn't hurt either!

And no mention of E-Mail, the speciality of a BlackBerry.

Agree with the above. Seems to me you bought the wrong device for your needs.

Could the BlackBerry's "bling factor" have figured into this purchasing decision?

I was thinking same thing.... Well, sort of. The 8100 did, in its day. But nothing since, and certainly not nowadays.... The droid is where it's at, dontcha know.

I don't know guys. My son, who is 18, and recently graduated from high school, has a blackberry. As do lots of his friends. They all like them over other phones. The 9700 seems to be the phone to have. They are all very heavy on BBM. So I think there is a certain bling factor.

Honestly, if I want a bling phone, I wouldn't buy anything sold by a US provider. I would get a Vertu, Mobiado, Ulysse Nardin, TAG Heuer Meridiist or other high-end phone that does almost nothing but make calls and send SMS. LOL

I prefer understatement and utility, which is why I've owned nearly 40 BlackBerry devices in the last 5 years, and it heavily influenced my decision to get the HTC Legend (and more recently my Pre 2) over other smartphones when I could no longer use BlackBerry to its potential. My feeling is that this perceived bling factor is really more of a thing of kids wanting to be like adults. In my late teens, it was whether or not you had a Nextel. I was the first person I knew to get the gold i1000+, then the i90c, and then the i95cl. Things that are popular with kids change frequently, and I'm sure that there will be something else to replace BlackBerry eventually. The biggest problem with all of this is product dilution. Grey Goose vodka is another good example of that. It gets popular, and the quality and exclusivity drops.

I think you're right. It's the brand. When the iPhone came out, I thought my son's friends would all move en masse. Didn't happen. They all want a BB, no matter the carrier. And the fact that all their business oriented parents were buying these phones, probably influenced their choices just a wee bit.

It seems a lot of kids want a Blackberry at least until their parents see the cost.

You know, I honestly haven't paid too much attention to US plans of late other than what Engadget posts up. I only have one option for unlimited mobile Internet here in Afghanistan, and that is with AWCC, so that's who I use for both my phone and my iPad. LOL $22/month for all the GPRS I can consume...
