Eh, why would you have a BlackBerry without a data plan? I are confused.

How did you get a BlackBerry without a data plan? I am concerned.

Read the yellow sticky at the top of this section. It has reviews of most of the map applications for the BB. There are only one or two that do not require a data plan. And from what I have heard, they are expensive and not very good. But be your own judge.

I think Garmin also has an app that stores the maps on the SD. Not sure which cover your part of the world however. That could be an issue.

Getting a BlackBerry without a data plan is sorta like buying a Mercedes Benz without wheels and tires. Sure you look good sitting in it but you ain't going anywhere.

Without a data plan the use of internet, email and gps is extremely limited at best assuming that your phone supports Wi-Fi. Why spend the money on any smart phone and not get a data plan? Duh.

Dear All,

Let me rephrase this question:

Can you use Garmin navigation in offline mode? This would save lot's of money especially while you're roaming abroad.

Thanks for any ideas

Did you read the info in the yellow sticky as I suggested? Doesn't appear that you did.

Some of us can wait til we get home for emails and internet. My onboard GPS works great on the golf course using my stored courses. I can text when I need to using the kybd. I don't have a data plan because I don't need one. I have a BB because I can still do what I need with just the device and no data plan. Duh.

Hello all,

As shocking as it maybe for some, there's people out there that can live without a data plan! All I really need to function is a phone that works. I live in an area that has numerous open AP for wireless. Both purposely (coffee shops) and maybe not by design (some home users). At home I have everything I need, so I don't need a data plan there too.

I am interested in getting a phone that has GPS but I don't want to be tied down with a data plan to use it. If someone can either direct me to a thread, or explain to me how this is done, that would be great.

Again, I'm in a dense urban area with lots of wifi. If I don't have a signal I can use, no biggie. Also I plan on loading up the maps on my phone.

Trekbuddy and Mobile Gmaps (not google), allow you to compile maps on a computer and copy them to the BB and then use the gps. You need to select a wide enough map area to make them useful. But they are only maps - I don't believe you can search for addresses, intersections, etc.

I don't see where the original question was clearly answered. I for one can explain why I could use a Blackberry without a data, or even a phone plan. I'm thinking of purchasing a Golf GPS( average cost $250 - $300). If I can buy a used Blackberry with built in GPS, and then download Golflogix, I could use it as a golf GPS with only an annual fee from Golflogix of $39.00. I already have a company supplied Blackberry, but it's an old 8703e, and it doesn't look like they're willing to give me an upgrade at this time.
Has anyone out there tried this ??

Yes their is a new player on ground called NOGAGO and available by this name on AppWorld and their Website. They provide you with a free app to display offline MAPs saved on the SD-CARD.

Compared to Trekbuddy they provide you with a pretty easy map creation process and process to transfer the maps to the storage on your device. It is the first App to support total offline navigation I found so far.

The Maps are created with newest available material from OSM Project and the charge you for a lifetime licence only 5 USD for 1x1 Longtitude vs Latitude (60km x 90km). As a very handy feature I found the search for Point of Interest POI very cool!

So the whole complicate map creation process, you are forced to do when using Trekbuddy is take care of in a very elegant way.

If you travel internationally then roaming becomes expensive and having maps on the phone is better. I miss my Nokia Maps on my old E71 (in actual fact I miss my Nokia, fullstop - installing a leaked OS 6 on my 9300 has made a huge difference though, I must add). The Nokia maps are downloaded and stored on the memory card and the turn by turn navigation is superb, in all far superior to the BB maps. I have tried Mobile Gmaps, not nearly as good and creating maps is messy and slow, it is not meant for offline storage so is a workaround. I saw the mobile Garmin on some one else' phone, very good, looks just like a Garmin so if you want to spend some rubbles then is the best option to go for by far.

The Garmin application requires an active data connection.
