Also, sim card will cost you $20 (tmobile) make sure you contact them first, maybe you can get a free one, if not they will give you credit for it.

...as for why this release, I have no clue. Perhaps since this release ultimately kills UMA (first one to do this), maybe they thought it best that their customers not be able to use it.
Or maybe this is the reason why UMA wasn't working in the first place. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me a bit to see a carrier start blocking devices running certain rogue OS versions that have the potential of harming their network (more of a legal thought than actual reality).

I understand all of that, but how can they tell which software the phone is running....... Does the phone tell RIM what software it is running, and if it does why not a warning from TMO or RIM to remove the software or else.....

So for those that this happened to, you just bought a new sim card from your carrier but with the same phone number on it? Did the carrier know you had a beta OS or were no questions asked? I'm just curious how you fixed the problem in case it happens to someone else I know...

Yea, the sim card was totally dead, I tried it on my mom's blackberry and it didn't work, so it's definitely the sim card.

Yea, same phone number. I didn't tell them that I was running a beta OS, this could void your warranty. I just told them that it all of a sudden stopped working. I had to pay $20 for the sim, but they gave me credit for it.

Good to know. Just curious, did you go back to the beta OS or did you decide to stay with the current TM 4.2 OS?

It sounds weird that an OS would do that, but who knows.

Yes, they can tell what version software the devices are running. As for why no warning, I believe that is likely in the terms of service. However, someone may want to call T-Mobile and ask why their SIM card was disabled (although play dumb and treat it like a general support call).
...I really hope AT&T starts doing this, as well. That will be one hilarious phone conversation when I call in...

It is not surprising at all that this would happen. RIM has taken several measures to stop leaks, though it is nearly impossible to stop them all. There have been several actual RIM employees fired for what they have done to violate their NDA. The next logical step, if you cant control the internal leaks, is to try and control the external users.

You know this does have some merit. I have AT&T and had 4.5.0.18 on my 8100. It worked fine for a day or so, then I started getting kicked off the EDGE network consistently. I had to do battery pulls almost hourly, but eventually would get kicked off again. I could still make calls and use text messaging, but all data services were dead. Never thought about AT&T purposely shutting it off. Switched back to last stable release from Rogers and have been fine ever since. Could always be an issue with the beta OS too I suppose.

Your last statement is the correct assumption - that release was horrible for network connectivity.

I think this may be an unrelated problem. My sim card shat out on me after 6 weeks and that was when I was using 2.194. I used the same sim card on my v600 for 7 years w/o incident. If they were actively hunting (which would not be at all difficult with help from the carriers), they would have the leak contained already.
