Default Trackball Failure

Please Login to Remove!

Trying to scroll down, trackball doesn't detect. Rebooted, same problem. Must be hardware.

It's like the old mice with the balls... like the roller for the down sensor is not working or something.

Any ideas?

Yes. Depress the ball firmly down and at the same time roll it several different directions. *Most* of the time after a few really firm rolls with it depressed it will spit out what ever is blocking the roller.

Long term solution....search for cleaning trackball assembly.

let me know if it works please!

There are a few things you can do.

First try pressing the ball and rolling it around. Sometimes that will dislodge any lint or whatever obstructing the pickups.

If that doesn't work, try spraying some canned (compresed) air around the ball while pressing it down.

Next idea would be to dip a Q-tip into some alcohol and clean the ball wile rolling it around.

One of those three or combination thereof will usually fix it. If not, i guess you could try to remove the ball, but I do not recommnd it or know how to do it.

And finally, don't carry the device in your pocket ans that is generally what causes the problem in the first place.

Did the suggestions work? It helps all members when they know if a proposed solution works and besides it gives the members who took the time to share a little satisfaction that their advice helped or a chance to further assist if it didn't!

About a month after I got my, then, new 8800, the trackball stopped working. From having previously worked in the computer service business, I knew that trackballs are particularly susceptable to having debris find its way onto the rollers, down inside the trackball assembly. So, I tried the trick of depressing the trackball, while rolling it every which way, in hopes of dislodging whatever was hanging my trackball mechanism up.

To my delight, it wasn't long before a surprisingly large piece of debris got spit out of the opening around the ball. The trackball has worked perfectly, ever since.

Putting the device in your pocket increases the chances of getting dirt/lint in the trackball and having this problem. I suggest a case. it won't prevent it 100% but decreases the number of problems.

Agreed, I had a pearl with the same issues, I started to use a holster and have never had any issues with the pearl or the 8800. I just try to keep them out of dusty areas, especially after looking at the instructions to disassembling the trackball.
