Only way to get a free unlock code, is via the carrier.
You cannot contact the carrier, you are going to have to contact an unlocking company, and yes it will cost.
This is your only way.

I got mine unlocked on eBay for 0.99. No need to contact orange, and the whole process was done in less than an hour. Very reliable and the seller gave pretty comprehensive instructions. PM me and I'll send you the user name if you think it'll help.

Cheers

Also, if you look around some websites and forums, you might be able to find some contests where you can win a free code.

And personally, I wouldn't trust the codes from eBay. Not only do they violate eBay's policies, it's just risky.

Whatever direction you go, use a reputable company.

I unlocked mine myself using a web based service, and I got it first time. But for the small actual cost, I'd use a reputable unlocking service next time. If it had gone wrong I would have no support guarantees etc.

There are ads for Horizon all over this forum, call them see what they advise.
