heya,
I don't think there is a limit.. might depend if you are running 3rd party applicatoins etc.

But I am sure I have seen people say they have 1000s of them.

believe it's memory based, so contacts with lots of info will take up more space than ones with just an email address.
8700's have 64MB?
I know my 7520 has 32, and will store more than the 2000 or so I have.

The 8700c has 72 MB and it is memory based.

However, the address book field "notes" truncates after 4 KB.

I was under the impression that 8700s had 64mb of free memory. Do any of the other 8700s have more than 64mb?

There doesn't seem to be a limit up to the memory constraints of the device. Someone posted before an estimated amount of KB per contact (on average). If you know your particular average, you can calculate how many could likely fit in your case.

I, too, have users in the ca.5500 contact range without problems.

I am sorry..but thats just crazy. why would anyone keep 5,500 contacts in their phone???? How can you possibly remember that you know and have a phone number or email for every person in your addresss book.

I had 200 and realized I never called or emailed 1/2 of the people that I had numbers or addresses for so I deleted most of them

Same question I asked in another thread where someone said they had 100,000 contacts. I can only assume that many contacts is a corparate contact list.

Default Max number of contacts

In working with the 8700, I have had problems completing installations if XM is installed on the device and the user has more than 3000 contacts.

With XM and more than 3000 contacts the device fails to Enterprise Activate and multiple jvm errors are received.

On 7280 and 7290 devices the cap sems to be around 2000 contacts before the device fails (again with XM installed).

Removing the Xpress Messaging app resolves the issue (most of my customers are not willing to reduce the number of their contacts).

Just my .02

Our Sales people manage subset (via custom export) from our Marketing database of some 50-60,000 contacts I would estimate. so they tend to keep about 5k contacts apiece at any one time. (we found that to be the magic number that would cause a 16MB handheld to melt down in our case). An administrative assistant that makes sure each rep has the contacts he or she is most likely to need (changes all the time).

It seems like overkill, but we recouped enough extra sales after the first month to pay for all of the blackberrys, service, and the BES server. so it clearly works. Despite the naysayers saying it is simply not needed. I know most of the increased sales were due to push email - rather than a push of 5k contacts - . But every little bit helps.

This IS easy corey. Marketing, CEO's, networking, Venture Capitalists.. many many fields require a database of contacts for 'when it's needed'. You might not use them all, or very often, but the fact they are there is for when you do. That's the whole point of the PDA!

That many contacts is very impressive. I guess the number one priority for that is to back up your addresses constantly!

I can imagine the number of filters is just as impressive.

While I agree, I know one person that has close to 5,000 contacts - and that doesn't include a shared address book that has almost another 1,000!

To answer the question, it is memory based. To see what kind of memory is being used, go to Settings --> Options --> Status. Click the wheel, and select Database Sizes. I have 967 entries which occupy 218.9K.

As someone mentioned earlier, some companies may choose to have their entire corproate address book downloaded to emplpyees' Berries, but that would bethe only reason I can think of for that many.

To put this in perspective, I went to college in a town with fewer than 5500 people.
