Default Updating your site Via FTP. Who would use something like this?

Please Login to Remove!

Suppose someone has been working on something that allows a blackberry user to update their website via the blackberry. It basically gives FTP access to any page on your server and allows the admin to edit the scripts and text on the page... Just like editing your site via notepad. No downloads or uploads neccesary.

How many people on this forum would use this? What would you say a reasonable price would be for unlimited use?

I would be interested.

Like most other BB programs and apps I think a fair price is based upon how well the program interfaces and functions. Will it be for all models or just a few? Still some open ended questions to answer before price can be determined.

I can say that I would likely pay $20-$30 off hand.

Basically, it is a script that allows you to enter login info to your ftp server and specify the file name of the page you would like to edit. After login you view the source code of the specified page, edit it to your needs, then save it. Let me know any other questions you may have.

Yes, in the $20 range. I would not use it to edit but to retrieve customer contact form data

I was thinking $3-$4 per month since it will be hitting my server for the scripts to convert ftp pages to text viewable on the blackberry. This runs up alot of traffic per use.

So this is basically a website and no Blackberry-program?
I think many people would pay up to 5$ per month for it, although you might get it for free somewhere (I am a little bit into PHP and don´t think it is a hard work to code something...) And with some ads you could have enough money for the traffic, it´s only plain text after all....

Negative. Its going to be a program that accesses a server just like any BB client server app. Although, the script was initially written in perl. Currently its just a perl app that works on BBs. I will launch a beta test when the script is complete. Thanks

hmm, see... web-based application that you have to input your login/password information for you website for... i think i'm a wee bit over-paranoid when it comes to things like that. if it were an application, or even just the perl script, then sure. but i think thats asking for too much trust from one party to the other.

...lastly, if i'm going to be making changes to one of my webpages, then i'm more than happy with my FTP program and notepad/textpad/dreamweaver. there's a small percentage of web designers on the go who would need to make instant changes, imo.

Thanks for the feedback. I can tell you the connection will be encrypted and I will not be recieving your account information. There will be no cookies that store it locally or on the server. The only person that will see the login details is the user. Thanks again!

I would definately be interested. Although a one time fee would be of more interest to me. I barely pay $10 a month for my current webserver which supports tens of thousands of hits...I don't know if I could justify $5 just to have access to my index.htm. Server space is extremely cheap right now.

My hosting company, ICDSoft (plug cause they are cool), offers a browser based control panel.

Once inside, you navigate to the file, and select it from the page. Bam, I'm in a big old text box updating away.

It's comes with the service, no extra fees. Bam.

Sure, others might not be so lucky, so $20 for the app. People think they can charge monthly or reoccuring charges. I like to own, not lease.
