Default Dial by name in Phone menu lost after 4.1

Please Login to Remove!

I upgraded my 7520 to 4.1 and noticed that the dial by name feature, where I could enter the first few letters of a person's name under the dial number area, pull up their phone number and dial, is gone. Is there any way to restore this feature? Right now I have to click the trackwheel and select "dial from address book".

I'm looking for the quick method to call from the address book when in the phone screen. On 4.0, you could just start typing letters in the call log, below the number entry on the phone screen, and it would bring up names. It appears that they eliminated this feature with 4.1 and you now have to click the trackwheel and select "call from address book" to do it. Before, it was easier, and I'd like to find if there is still a way to do this.

The quickest (only) way to get this functionality is to go back to 4.0.2. I did.

Did I mention that this bug/omission is utteryly idiotic on a device with a full keyboard...

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7520/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/103)

Same with me...I don't think there is a solution for it. The feature is surely missed...I guess just program shortcut to the contacts used the most...

No way to change it, unfortunatly; unless RIM realizes the power of this function and reintroduces it.

The function is still there but accessed differently in 4.1: press & hold the green key for about1 second from just about any screen, and the address book will appear below the title "Call:". Entering the first 2 or 3 letters will bring up the relevant entries in your contacts.

Problem is that not all BBs have the Green Phone Button. 72XX series to for one set. This Thread is about those phones. I haven't gone back to my 7290 to upload 4.1 and probably won't so can't do any experimentation for research on this.

Hope this helps.

Nope, you're right, I have 4.1 on my 7290 and there is no green button.
I've tried and tried to dial by name in the phone screen but gave up.

Soapm, Do you use a shortcut to go to the phone app? If so, try this for me, press and hold the shortcut key slightly longer than normal and see if that does it. or try the same with the trackwheel. Let Play a little, maybe we can find the answer.

Thumbs down Software Upgrade to 4.1.0.273

Boy what a frickin nightmare!

So after spending what seemed to be an eternity on the upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1.0.273 (took like 30 mins) then I find the following:

Pro:
---
My blackberry 7520 finally integrates its phonebook via bluetooth with the IDrive in my BMW.

Con:
---
Now I've lost the feature of dialing by name in the phone book... what once was 2 clicks and 3 letters to call "MOM" is now a ton of other crap clicks, et al.

So where do we go from here? It took them months to upgrade the intergration so now that bluetooth works in the car, but I want my dial by name back.

has anyone figured out how to do so yet? please!! I dont wanna go backwards in software, but at this point, if I don't get a fix soon, Im going to have to... I need my dial by name...

from the dial screen push the track wheel in and you will see " call from address"
select that and a Call: will appear. type a few characters and it will find your number. If you have only one number in address you can select it or roll down to select other numers listed such as mobil or other listing

Add me to the list of people that find it utterly unbelievable that this feature was removed. I would actually not be able to deploy this software to any of my company's BB's due to this.

The solution of downgrading to get the feature back doesn't really excite me either. Does anyone have any insight on how to contact RIM for the purpose of asking them to put it back? Probably it would not result in much luck, but it would be worth a shot.

Sorry for the mini-rant.

Feel free to rant with those of us who understand your pain. You can try [email address].

...

@RCBJR = I tried holding the phone button on the top in slightly longer than normal and still no green button. Just kidding, what's real funny is my 7290 does not go into phone mode if I hold the button too long. I tried the trackwheel also and seems you have to choose call from address on the menu.

I'm with all of you--this was one of those features that was so intuitive, and now it's lost. It made calling while on the road so easy.

I want it to work like it did before! The list of names in the phonebook is now useless to me.

One of the great things about the blackberry was that I hardly ever dialed a number. I was always using this feature to find who I was calling by name.

It was only the oddest of situations when I'd actually enter a number to dial from. Now they've assumed that this would be the most typical for the phonebook.

Setting the BB OS this way sets it for the lowest-common-denominator user: those few who find the address book and synchronizing with a PIM too difficult. That's not what the BB was created for!

I have my phone set up with a letter assigned to the phone numbers I call most often. Do you know if this feature is still available after the upgrade? I also may not want to upgrade if this is not available. Thanks in advance for any information.

Angry Quick dial in phone mode

I am very irritated and agree with all of you. I just upgraded my firmware to 4.1 and it took almost an hour and now a subtle, yet very practical feature like the quick dial in phone mode is going to drive me back to the old software version. This feature FAR outweighs any of the upgrades I recieved, not to mention it now forced me to finally purchase and register Texas Hold'em 2 and made it inactive, which is another bummer. Stick to the old software if you haven't switched. I don't even know how to downgrade software since it is such an obtuse process.

It turned me from a bb fan to a frustrated bb user, which is a HORRIBLE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE.

This sucks so bad, where can i go to get a previous version of the BB OS.
Also, do any of the minor fixes between the previous version of the OS and 4.1 still have the quick dail feature in it.
