Angry Communication problems on all our devices.

Please Login to Remove!

We have a BES server 4.1.6.9 with 33 users. We have a business account at T-Mobile netherlands. We have some communication problems happening on all devices.

* When sending an e-mail from the device most of the times we have to try sending again 5 - 10 times before it really sends.

* When trying to visit a website we have to try up to 20 times before the page is shown. We almost directly get "Communication problem with mobile data service etc."

* Activating a device takes forever. The percentage meter stalls on 0% for a few hours. Sometimes after 5 ours or more the device is activated successfully but most of the times we have to cancel activation and try all over again.

* Just like browsing the web, installing a program/game etc takes 20 or more retries before installing begins.

Receiving e-mails always works but I don't know how many retries are in the background of course.

The problems occur on GPRS connections but also 3G.

OK so most of the issues point to problems on your server. More info please -

Mail server type?
Setup and position of BES and mailservers
When did the problems start?
Are browsing issues through MDS or T-mobile (if t-mob, talk to them).
Ditto for installation, which browser are you using to get the app?

Sounds to me like the BES and Email Server physical locations might be an issue (different LAN's, buildings, cities, countries, etc.)

We use Exchange 2007 update rollup 6 for SP1. The mail and blackberry servers are installed in the same location in vmware machines. The blackberry server is in a dmz.

The problems have been there since the blackberry was set up in January this year.

We thought there was some kind of problem with the proxy but internet works normally on the blackberry server itself. It doesn't use any ISA or something, it's just directly connected to the outside.

One other thing, when I connect to a WIFI hotspot and use the blackberry browser to connect by WIFI it's also giving me errors like:

"A communication failure occured with the selected Mobile Data Service. The server may be busy, please try again later. If the problem persists contact your system administrator".

When I try again it starts to load the page. What way does data travel when I use the hotspot browser. When I try the accesspoint with my laptop there are no communication problems.

Is the entire BES in the DMZ??? If so there's your problem -

Yes it is. Our understanding was that it was not recommended but also not discouraged. Thanks for the document, I'll take this up with my colleagues.

NP. Yeah it's discouraged to the point where it's not supported . That should be enough info to get moving it off the DMZ approved asap! You can leave the router in the DMZ but bring the rest behind the firewall. Lots of threads about doing it on here if you get stuck.
