Once a GSM device is unlocked, it is permanently unlocked.

I'm going to add a coda here about VVM; just a couple of wrinkles not addressed in this very complete thread. I tried provisioning the service online and it didn't take, so I had to call AT&T. When it finally did take, I had to call a second time to fix the greeting. Even though I'd picked the "standard" greeting, callers trying to leave me a message were being asked to supply the number they were calling. AT&T tech support said this sometimes happens when "you move up to a new platform." They fixed the problem immediately. I moved from 167 to 517; so the wrinkle may have been caused by switching from such an old platform directly to the latest build. Everything else works fine. I'd note that not all options and choices are preserved when you upgrade -- ring tones was one -- but the procedure is relatively painless.

Not correct. Upgrades via Desktop Manager or Wireless Update will preserve any BES/BIS service books.

You still need to do Enterprise Activation to reconnect fully to BES, unless you are John Clark, in which case you don't.

The BES service books are NOT preserved and the encryption keys are broken during ANY OS upgrade. If you use Desktop Manager AND you are on a PC connected to your work email system (via LAN or VPN) AND Desktop Manager is installed properly for BES use then the Enterprise Activation will begin when the OS upgrade is complete. If not, you will need to get an EA password from your BES Admin in order to reconnect to the BES.
BIS devices normally will have no issues. The service books will be preserved and resent when the device registers on the network.
Wireless Update (though I've never used it) should preserve everything as it doesn't really upgrade the entire OS. It only upgrades certain modules.

Does this sw version maintain the press and hold the BlackBerry key to access taskman?

I just upgraded OTA last night. I battery pulled this AM and boot was very fast. I spent a few minutes moving icons, validated that BES is still active all all my settings appear to have remained, and noticed that I can get to App Switcher by holding the menu key now. The only issue is that clicking VVM says provisioning was unsuccessful and to contact my service provider. Is AT&T charging for VVM like everyone else, and that's why it doesn't work?

I think I really broke it
Tried it, the loader gave application error 0x000000000001 (#0's not verified).
Now when I plug it into USB it doesn't recognize it....
Thoughts?

I just hung up with ATT Cust Svc and they said they have a known issue with VVM for new subscribers and can't set it up. If you already had it provisioned, it is still working, but they aren't able to enroll new users

I updated to .297 when it first came out and was pretty happy with it. It seemed like my free memory was much higher than it had ever been. However, now it seems like my memory is getting hogged up by something and I haven't really installed anything crazy since upgrading.
I've also noticed that the boot-up time has increased and that my Bold is really laggy for about 3-4 minutes when it finally boots.
Has anyone else noticed this? Any fixes?

Hello all, I could you some of your guys' expertise.
After this update, my bold will:
1) Not allow me to use Youtube, get "Server is unresponsive or blocked" when I try to watch videos from m.youtube.com
2) Google maps will not install, just freezes at installation.
Any advice would be helpful.
This occurred after this OS update in which youtube worked perfectly.

Cannot do OTA or DM upgrade of OS
I have an AT&T Bold, purchased E/O last year with .167 operating system. I have never attempted to do anything with the phone other than use it. I have only a few apps. I have been reading about how to do OTA and DM upgrades for the OE. Unfortunately, there I can find no wireless upgrade application on the phone.
I can find options>advanced> but there is no wireless upgrade application there.
Also, I tried to use DM, and the update under the application loader, but it say there are no updates for the device.
Why can't I find these?

I have upgraded and called AT&T to get VVM working on my Bold 9000. All three of the numbers you ask about are the same on my Bold..

VVM was provisioned and set up on my phone, but when I called in to test it I was getting a message as if there was no mailbox for my number. If I hit Ignore during the incoming call, it would work fine. Turns out that the call forwarding numbers I mentioned above had one number for If Busy and If Not Reachable, and the old basic voicemail number for If No Reply, but neither of those numbers match what I have as my voicemail number. I'm guessing that's because I let AT&T customer care have at it when I had problems with VVM on the original .297 upgrade. Now that everything seems to be working, I just wanted to verify that all of the numbers should match.

Thanks!
