Hmm... 760 is Palm Springs...? Any chance you could open the database to allow us to set our own messages for each area code? I would make 760 "North & North East County San Diego"

If you went all out and made this work for exchanges and polished it up some, RIM might buy this app off you? Might be worth the work...

Kudos.

I'm really after a UK version. I can help you develop a UK one, or send you the area codes and corresponding area names if you want too?

I am willing to help develop the UK version and/or update the database if the author is willing to share his code...

Default CNAM Dip - Costs $

BS indeed!
The most likely reason they have not implemented calling name functionality, is that each time the dip to the database it costs $, and at millions of calls it adds up quick. That is if they didn't download their own CNAM datbase once a day and dip to their local copy per call, only paying for the single dip and download (times the total # downloaded) once. Plus there's a whole mess of compensation between carriers for dipping to each others Calling Name data, per call. Too much fun.

I work for a LEC and can tell you there is no FCC licensing issue. Liars. It's a subscription and $ issue. Also possibly a network issue to carry and pass the extra information in the call stream. It is free to add calling name info to the databases in the sky. It only costs $ when you dip to pull info.
Either way it always comes down to $.

Anyone know more about mobile carrier operations? I've only ever worked in the LEC and IXC side, would love to learn more.

Default NPA-NXX table - Donation

bberic...

I'd be happy to donate a fairly current NPA-NXX table to your project.
I just compiled a simple table containing the NPA, NXX, State, Location Name.
There are currently (as of June'07) 162,571 unique NPA-NXX combinations for North American dialing (US50, Canada, and Carribean).

If you filter out the AreaCode + 555 for directory assistance, and some other odds and ends, it could be a slightly smaller total record count.
I'm not sure about device storage or sd card size constraints for your app, but you're more than welcome to the data. PM me anytime.

To those of you who listed various examples of inaccurate city names,
understand that "location names" or "rate centers" are not the same as City Names. The US is broken up into RateCenters for telecom NPANXX rating and location information. The RateCenter name, may or may not be the same as your geographic/postal city name. It has to do with Metropolitan Service areas, ILEC tandem/switch locations, etc. Huge messy pain the *ss, actually.
I searched my records for some of your examples listed in this thread, and all but 1 came up as the City the member mentioned. Lake Forest, CA was the only one I could not find a matching RateCenter name for. If you give me the NPANXX you were looking for I'd be happy to check it, see if the name is something that makes sense to those who live in this area.

I also have Int'l cc tables, with some major city breakouts, but nothing as detailed as most would probably prefer. Int'l is a bit trickier in finding accurate dialing code data.
Any subscription I've purchased in the past from various companies has been very disappointing. I ended up compiling our own int'l code table to ensure a bit more accuracy.
You are welcome to this data as well. I'd be happy to donate.
Again, I assume lookup table sizes for the app are a major consideration.

I too am frustrated at the lack of calling name, or at least location/state support from mobile carriers.

I already have an internal alpha version on my Curve.. hopefully next week I could have something I could release... just to give a lil' heads up of functionality:

* Same by state recognition of caller name
* Being able to download your definitions files of your zone (i would have to host a file with the area codes / cities)

Now a different feature that I bet lotsa people will love

* Be able to recognize a Caller Name by their phone number! You must be able to have access to a web service that you can submit via parameter the phone number, and it would return the caller name.
* Oh and i forgot to tell... it will work with BIS-B ;)

This is still a work in progress.. so far Ive made my version work on my mexican network, I need to tweak to make it multi-region etc...

Still thanks for the author of this version, since he helped me a bit on how to change the callername (This is my first BB app i develop)

Like the app, but I had a problem with it... It kept saving the entries in my address book. And they would also get replicated back to my exchange server and end up on my desktop client as well.

Is there an easy fix for this? I denied it address book rights in application permissions, but then it doesn't bring up the location at all.
