Just wondering whether its a .176 problem or a VZNav issue...
I suppose I am in the minority here but I was able to install the Telus .176 and install VZNav during the small window that VZ was offering it for 8830 users. I have used VZNav extensively throughout NE Maryland down to DC and it has been nothing short of perfect. My 8830 is just as rock solid after the .176 upgrade as it was prior. The one question I do have is what exactly are 'memory leaks'. How does one know this is an issue? I'm just not very well versed with that problem.

i had 176 running with vznav, my common problems were,

os free ram drops to 10-5 megs after 2 days,
the 1evdo network became 1x randomly
battery drain in about 4 hrs (didnt notice if it was due to 1x and not being in 1evdo or vznav which is also bugged)

vz nav bugs
only real problem with vz nav is it dont exit clean, so sometimes it dont exit, and its not running but locks its call to gps, which gives error 15 i think no gps, only fix to that is soft reset.

overall the os is the worst, it has alot to do with the firmware remapping memory for all phone/gps functions.

The Java folder is the JRE/Java Apps together. The CDMA folder is just the firmware.

Anyhow, even people with a standard load of .176 are reporting a bad memory leak. Could be .176 or it could be the VZNav POS program.
Tks for the clarification. Thinking about a bit more I suppose memory exhaustion could result from in appropriate control of object lifecycle.... I know its nit picky, but technically the JRE takes care of GC and doesn't leak mem. On the other hand, how similar is the underlying hw? Do all 88xx's basically have the same guts? I'd assume the firmware provides a fairly abstracted base.... <Sigh> wish I'd kept an old berry around to play /w ;)

Default Updating Sprint 8830 to this

Hi,
I hate the 8830 on Verizon (but love the network)...love the device on Sprint...but I hate its network! Is there a way to set it to roam on Verizon at specific locations? I barely have any reception in my bedroom and I don't want to return Sprint 8830. I am upgrading to the Verizon 8830 device software. Would that help?

Maybe this should be in a different thread/forum...but I have 10 more days to decide...any and all help appreciated!

Thanks,
Raj

No, there is no way to do that. That's all controlled by your provisioning by the carriers.

Both carriers have the 8830 with the only difference being the color and Verizon only allows GPS use with their VZ navigator program.

Telus - 8830EFS_PBr4.2.2_rel322_PL3.0.0.76_A4.2.2.176_Telus_Mobility.exe (70MB)
VZW - 8830EFS_PBr4.2.2_rel339_PL3.0.0.79_A4.2.2.176.exe (89MB)

No memory leak with the VZW software as of yet on my 8830.
Ringtones are noticeably louder.

Damn, the old OSs used to be about 71MB in download size. This one is 90MB. What the hell did they add to it?

What are the concerns Verizon has with running the new version with an enterprise server? I assume it has something to do with making sure you have latest versions on the server end, but would appreciate any input prior to calling my IT guys.

Hey all, I've been reading this forum for about a year now and finally decided to join. I dl'd the telus os last night and it works great, but i am concerned about the fact that the telus os is only 71 mb, versus vzw's being 90. I don't know if this is a good or bad thing. I'll wait around and see what i hear i guess.

Can anyone confirm that the Verizon version of .176 makes the ringtones louder? How about memory handling? Any other differences? Thanks!

The ringtones seemed louder at first, but now I'm used to them, so only the way for folks to definitively compare is to have two units with two software versions loaded side by side.
As far as memory leaks - or the lack off in this case - no issues while my 8830 has been powered on continuosly these past 42 hours.

I can't believe no one has asked if there's a mem size difference before and after the upgrade and if it's more or less.

Also, for the guy that asked if the download size was because of VZNav, no, actually VZNav is super small in terms of size and it's downloaded seperatly. It has to be something else.

^^^ The version numbers are the same as VZW's... even the filesize is the same. I'm willing to be there's no difference.
