Hey all,

I'm hoping you can help me because I'm a tad stumped here.

I did the install of BES 4.0 following all of the directions, making sure all pre-requisites were in place and for some reason Blackberry Manager cannot connect to the MSDE 2000 Database.

What's odd is if I use the Blackberry Server Configuration and test the connection it says that the connection is ok, yet I am still getting the error.

Does anyone have any ideas? I pretty much left everything at the defaults, have tried multiple reboots, even tried uninstalling BES and reinstalling after a reboot in between.

Also I did get an error about cdo.dll, and although the documentation does say to update it with a hotfix, in trying to do so I couldn't because I already have Exchange 2003 SP1 installed which has a newer version of cdo.dll.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was stumped earlier this week as well till I read the manual :P

By default, MSDE loads with no network connections. If you look in \program files\microsoft sql server\80\tools\binn there is a utility called svrnetcn.exe which will allow you to add a network connection. You'll have to restart SQL for it to kick in.

Thanks man...and all this time I figured since I wasn't going to install the management tools remotely that the networking component wasn're required. Makes sense though...

Hey man,

Actually as much as that did make sense, I just tried it out and no go. I figured maybe that the BB Manager was using the network and connecting to localhost but using network protocols. I am trying to connect from the BES Server locally using Blackberry Manager.

Still seem to be getting the same error. Though the Blackberry Server Configuration utility tests the connection and says that everything is ok.

Any other ideas?

I just found the network thing this morning that got BB Manger working on my remote workstation, but I never had a problem connecting with the manager on the BES itself. What is the exact error you're getting?

When trying to open the Blackberry Manager I get the error "Unable to connect to database!" in a window with an OK button on it and nothing else. When the Blackberry Manager opens it's just blank and I can't do much. This is all trying to be done from the same system as the BES Server itself.

Well I talked to our provider (Rogers) and they got RIM on the phone. Turns out that it was all my fault because of the way that I had installed BES using our domain admin account rather than the BES Admin account, although I don't remember reading anywhere in the instructions where it said specifically to use it - just to create it with appropriate permissions etc. If it did I was obviously one coffee short with my attention span to pick it up at 12-midnight.

RIM had me export some registry settings, migrate them to the BES Admin account and then make sure the services were set to use BES Admin account.

In my error I thought that BES Setup would prompt me for the account to use for BES server and I now remember that it had me put in our domain admin account password (the account I was logged in with).

Thanks for the suggestions though guys! The RIM guys had me checking the MSDE 2k Network settings first off!

The service accounts that you use to install and use the BlackBerry Enterprise Server must also have
permissions on the SQL Server and the configuration database.

By default, MSDE 2000 is installed with network protocols turned off. If you want to use a remote
BlackBerry Manager, you must edit the MSDE 2000 setup before installation so that a connection can
be made.

Actually this can be adjusted on an already installed MSDE installation as well. Use the DBAMGR2K (I think), it's kind of a SQL interface freeware knockoff for managing MSDE databases. Anyways, under general properties for the database it will allow you to setup tcp/ip connections.

I too did the same thing. Not looking at step 1, "Log in using the service account." being that is the BES admin account. Now my database can not be found upon startup of manager. This is a new install and we have never used BES before. Do you think it would be easier to uninstall BES and reinstall it under the BES admin service account log in, or by transferring the registry settings and migrating them to the BES admin account?

Bringing up an older thread. I just installed DBAMGR2K on my BES 4.0 with MSDE 2000. Great utility. But I cannot find where to enable or setup TCP/IP connections. I'm using the latest version (0.11.1). I've search through Properties and Advanced Properties and just haven't seen this option.

Hello everyone!

The installation of BES 4.0 has been a nightmare.

The documentation is very poor (especially on the database portion)...

I could not find any documentation on the Blackberry website which resolved my issue... although I stumbled onto this great forum and found this thread.

I have been in contact with my service provider who then routed my call to a RIM support specialist. I have been in contact with RIM for over three days now and they have not been able to resolve my issues.

I am hoping that someone who has had similar issues may be of some help to me by providing me some tips/tricks or procedures on how to resolve my issue.

I have tried the setup using different scenarios as explained below:

Scenario 1

- BES 4.0 installed on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Service Pack 4.0
- The BES Server was running MDAC 8.0 and the CDO.DLL; MAPI32.DLL; where the correct version
- The BES Server also had the Microsoft Exchange Administrator loaded with the latest version recommended by RIM - This was identical to the version on the Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Server (This server is running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 SP6a)
- Both the BES and Exchange are in the same domain (NT)
- User was created BESAdmin (Domain User (tried Domain Administrator as well); Log on locally and Log on as a Service where also added for the BESAdmin user account, the BESAdmin account was added to the local Administrators group on the BES Server
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP3a was loaded on an external server (Windows 2003) which was on an AD 2003 (trust relationships between AD and NT Domains).
- I was able to connect to the Blackberry Manager at times and sometimes it would give me the "Unable to connect to database" error. (This was resolved by restarting both the BES and SQL Server).
- I was not able to activate any RIM device wirelessly. The password would be sent to the local inbox in exchange but it would not forward to the RIM
- Desktop Redirector via BES also did not work
- BBSRPtest also was working
- The BES 4.0 was installed using the BESAdmin account

After many troubleshooting sessions with RIM and many database rebuilds and BES re-installs they decided to install the MSDE database on the BES server to rule out the fact that the SQL database was on another domain.

MSDE on the BES also provided the same issue: the blackberry could not activate locally via software or via wireless enterprise activation. E-mail would be sent to the inbox of the local exchange account but it would not forward to the RIM device at all.

Scenario 2

- BES Server 4.0 installed on new server with Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server on the SAME domain as our Exchange 5.5 NT 4.0 SP6a Server
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP3a was also installed on the BES Server
- SQL Server was installed first with BESAdmin account
- Microsoft Exchange Administrator with SP4 updates was installed
- BES 4.0 was installed last
- This time I received the "UNABLE TO CONNECT TO DATABASE!"
- I tried to re-install both BES and SQL but no luck
- I made sure that both TCP/IP and Named Pipes where enabled for both Server and Client network connectivity
- I also made sure that the CDO.DLL And MAPI32.DLL file where the correct versions and both matched the Exchange Server
- The BESMgmt Database had the proper configuration and the authentication was Windows (tried SA as well)
- SQL Server Service was tested with Local System Account as well as the BESAdmin account (same "unable to connect to database error".
- I tested database connectivity in the BES Manager Configuration and it was OK
- All other BES utility tests confirm everything is fine

Can someone please help me and provide me with some tips or procedures?

I am not sure if I have not done something correctly or if the database permissions are incorrect or I am missing something...

RIM has gone over many troubleshooting steps and I have also sent them the logs but they are still stumped.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

This may sound crazy but check your mapi connection is looking at the actual exchange server that has the BES service account mail box. This has caught a number of people out. The response on blackberry manager not connecting to database can be both SQL and also mapi..!

I have this exact same issue. The documetation does not state that the BES must be installed using the BESAdmin account so I installed with the Administrator account. What exactly is the solution? Short of uninstalling and re-installing?

I think you may be looking for svrnetcn.exe which is installed with MSDE.

The "BESAdmin" account is just a common account name everyone uses (or seems to use) to administer the BES. To avoid a lot of unnecessary work since you have already installed and configured the BES, simply create another account. Call it BESAdmin, BES_Service or BES_User if you like, grant the same permissions to the mailbox of the original account, and also the same required permissions to the Exchange server (server level or mailbox level) and the SQL db if using a remote SQL server. You'll also have to make some changes to the BES services that are curently running.

9 times out of 10 on a new install the error "Unable to Connect to the Database" is an Exchange permissions problem.

If you are running the SQL/MSDE locally to verify that it is not a SQL perimissions problem

1. Open a command prompt.
2. Type: osql -E
3. At 1> Type: use BESMgmt

If the above is successful the you can access the BESMgmt database using Windows Auth. and you issue is Exchange Permissions.

At this point it doesn't matter what account you install the BES as, expecially in a PURE 5.5 environment, because the issues with running BES as a Domain admin become effective in Exch 2k and 2k3. (I would suggest that you create a non-domain admin account as when you migrate and if it is forgotten it will break.)

But for arguments sake this error is purely a logon error.

In the MNGR the last line will probably will look something vaguely link this. But whatever it is take the number in brackets and google it that will tell you the MAPI failure. i.e. 80040111 = MAPI_E_LOGON_FAILURE
