Hey guys,

I am wondering if there is a way to tether the bold to a laptop? Especially when im travelling around the city, I need internet access from time to time.

Yes, it works just like the other blackberrys. i have mine working on usb and bluetooth modem.

It works indeed. I was able to get it working via the USB cable as well as Bluetooth. The dial up number for AT&T is *99***1# Rest everything is the same as in BlackberryFAQ.com (unless they updated it).

Oddly enough, AT&T connection manager does not detect the device. It used to work fine with the bold. So either AT&T needs to release a patch to detect the Bold or it is going by the vendorID and it does not recognize it because it is a Rogers device. Something tells me that the software is not intelligent enough to do the latter!

if and when i can ever upgrade my at&t 8820 to the bold, i wonder if the unlimited blackberry service i buy will (1) automatically get my hypothetical new bold zippier hsdpa (3g?) data coverage, and (2) support any kind of tethering without buying yet another plan.

I got 3g speeds using my Bold as a tethered modem. Granted they are a little slower than what you'd expect with a data card but nevertheless 1.2 Mbps download and 400 Kbps upload isn't bad at all!

Now I am told that inorder to officially be able to tether you need to buy the "Blackberry as a tethered modem" plan which on AT&T costs 14.99 for unlimited use if you already have a "qualifying" voice and/or data plan (read above $40).

I downloaded and installed the latest version of Connection Manager and it detected my Bold no problem. Connected without having to tweak settings.

I have to say I am very impressed with the performance. Don't remember the numbers but I ran remote desktop over VPN for a couple hours with almost no latencey. That's all that matters to me.

Perfomance even seemed to be better than my current Sprint EVDO USB card (with can now be retired).

A question that I have for anyone here is...has anyone here had any additional charges for using tethering without adding ATT's special tethering plan (in the scope of using this feature occasionally without large amounts of data)?

Right now I have a ATT Personal BIS Unlimited plan and the tethering function works fine...anyone else have the same experiences?

that's what I needed... in device manager for vista in properties for modem over bluetooth... it works... I'm on it now... took 6 hours to find someone who knew at att.. including the BB guys who had me clear out all traces of desktop manager and reinstall... what a day... all to save 30 bucks a month (I have a built in card in my laptop).

no connection manager...got to buy the plan.. we used *99#

I tried the AT&T Connection Manager and it doesn't work initially. I had to do some editing on the 3G Dialer in the Network Connection when AT&T Connection Manager was installed. I had to edit the initialization string. I still prefer the Bluetooth Method over USB.

My situation is different; with the Enterprise plan ($45/mo) there was no adder for tethering.

Should be able to. I have mine like this, and I don't have to pay extra. Also have 6gb /month.

Alright yeah I got it work that's pretty sweet. I am on an employee plan so I have unlimited data.

I called AT&T last night and the gal told me that if you have ANY Blackberry that you can use as much data as you want and you dont need an extra plan in order to use it as a modem...

Umm... I think I misunderstood teathering and using the phone as a modem maybe?
