Default Wi-Fi on new 8820 - Idiots Guide Requ'd...

Please Login to Remove!

Thanks for viewing!

I have just got my new Blackberry 8820 and am desperately trying to connect the device to my BT Home Hub wireless network.

I have gone through the procedure of finding and adding the wireless network and have confirmed the WEP key. Now, when i check the status, the wi-fi shows as connected. So i go to the browser and it starts downloading pages via GPRS!

I have set the preference to Wi-Fi but it still seems to ignore it.

I then tried logging in via the bookmark "hotspot login". When clicked, a Blackberry image comes up saying that i am connected to the internet. However, when i try to view a page it uses GPRS again!

Is this something to do with VPN?

I am a complete techno-phobe so simple answers required? Thanks so much for your help.

Dan

When you have WiFi connected, disable Mobile Network (which is GPRS) under Manage Connections.
Now, you should only have WiFi enabled and can run the following tests:

1. Can you send and receive emails on your blackberry? If yes- the problem may be in browser configuration, if no- you are not, really, WiFi connected all way through the RIM servers.

2. What error message you see in browser when you try to browse Web paqes, with only WiFi enabled?

Question - is there a way short of disableing the mobile network to prefer wifi for email ?

Thanks

This is exactly how my 8820 works. If it finds a Wifi AP that is in my list and configured, the BB will use Wifi for email and data rather than the cell network. It works perfectly and seamlessly and switches back and forth with no problems.

I often lose the cell network in my house, but my BB never stops receiving email, PIN messaage or data centric apps. Of course i cant make a call (Im on ATT and there is no UMA support, and SMS doesnt work because they come in over the GSM control channel.

8820 prefers WiFi over mobile network, but it is smart enough to seamlessly switch to wireless if WiFi has any issues.

To troubleshoot WiFi on blackberry you must disable Mobile Network.
