Has anyone tried to use a AT&T SIM Card in a Verizon 8830? Did it work?

it won't work in the US as the GSM frequencies used in the 8830 aren't used in the US.

You're kidding, right? The 8830 has a SIM slot for the GPRS side of the radio.

that was the reason I did not buy the 8830 only 2 GSM band, so it will not work in the US
if they made it with the 4 band I was the 1st one to buy,

The GSM portion must be unlocked on the Verizon 8830's before another sim will work, even outside North America. I believe some of the other carrier's 8830's are already unlocked.

I agree with you that this phone would have been cool with quad band GSM, but what incentive would VZW have in selling such a unit at that point? That's not how they do business. Heck, they are probably pulling their hair out every time someone asks to have the GSM side unlocked because their owners (Vodafone) loose money.

Imagine how cool it would be to walk into a RIM store (just like Nokia does it) and buy a BB with unlocked/unbranded CDMA/GSM(Quad), GPS, WIFI, and camera built in. Can you say SOLD? Ahh, it's nice to dream sometimes. Imagine taking that phone to any cell carrier you wish and activating it and being able to flip it to WIFI (VoIP) mode when you're at home or office to keep the minutes down on the cell plan. OMG, that would just rock.
