Default 8820 WIFI Problem

Please Login to Remove!

I'm testing a 8820 on Rogers and I have the following problem.

- with Data Services set to OFF under the Mobile Network Options I can see/authenticate to WIFI but there is a error showing IP Address not available. However, I can see the BB on my WIFI router, I can ping it, get responses, AND see the BB data arrows showing that data is going back/forth. If I try to use the PING command under WIFI Diagnostics it won't work because Device IP shows as 0.0.0.0

- with Data Services set to ON under the Mobile Network Options I have a valid IP from the WIFI router and am able to PING out, however, when I use data services NONE of them go over the WIFI link and instead go over the Mobile link. I know this because I'm looking looking at the routers realtime packet transfers.

Am I see these problems because the provider is blocking WIFI? Is this possible? I'm not on a BB plan as my normal phone is a RAZR, I'm testing this because I may be setting up a BES server and figured I'd play aroudn with the phone to see how I like it.

BTW. I'm using the latest AT&T firmware from the BB site

UPDATE: If I remove the SIM card w/ Data Services (Under Mobile Options) disabled, I have the same problem in that IP Address shows "Not Available". Now, according to the BB manual this option is strictly for Wireless, doesn't make any mention that it should matter for WIFI!

However, if I enable Data Services (SIM Card is still removed) then I can browse over WIFI with no problem.

So the question, why is the browsing default to Edge while the SIM card is in EVEN THOUGH WIFI is connected??

FIXED... reloaded OS and it's OK.. browsing goes through WIFI now.. it's a little worrying however that Data Services has to be enabled.. how can one be assured that WIFI is always being used and not Mobile Data?

I am having the same problem. For some reason if you turn off data Wifi also shuts off. Great way for AT&T to make money, having users not sure if they are using WiFi or Edge. It is really annoying me!

You can tell if you are on WiFi or EDGE by going into Manage Connections -> Services Status. It will clearly show you whether you are using your carrier or Wi-Fi for Voice, BIS and BES. Loads of information there.

Not on the 8820, it is obvious that AT&T has screwed with the connections.

Important - did you upgrade from another BlackBerry or is this a new BlackBerry?

OP here says he reloaded the OS and it came up fine.

I am not on AT&T so I can not tell you that they are screwing with the WiFi settings.

I have a non ATT model. If you go into the Manage Connections, WiFi Options, you will see the WiFi profiles saved/in use. If you choose WiFi Diagnostics, you will see the information relating to your current WiFi connection. I have seen various OS versions for the 8820 and some do not show which WiFi you are connected to in the Manage Connections panel. I cannot speak for the ATT loaded OS as I have the SmarTone version loaded currently.
