Hello, i was looking through the At&t website at their 8820, it doesnt clearly advertise the Gps, only the telenav service. Is the GPS on their phone actually locked to only certain apps?

Nope. On my 8800 I use the GPS on a multitude of applications.

He isn't asking about the 8800 though. He is asking about the 8820. There are rumors by other people that it is in fact locked. I want confirmation on this, because I was debating on getting my 8820 (decided against tilt) or pay a little bit less and get an 8800. If it is in fact locked, i will just get an 8800.

The GPS on my 8820 is unlocked, been using it with Google Maps and BBmaps.

Okay good. I guess I am getting the 8820 then. There is part of me that still wants the Tilt .... I am HOPING someone here talks me out of it so I get the 8820 instead! LOL I have a bad habit of getting things for pure gadgetry, and regretting my decision later.

Thats what I thought, but then I thought someone on here posted that their 8820 could not connect with google maps or something like that. I could be mistaken.

I can confirm that the GPS is NOT locked. I just downloaded the Google Maps application with GPS from Google Maps over-the-air and it worked instantly. My 8820 is brand new (got it yesterday, activated this morning) and I have not modified the .lbs files or anything. I'm really impressed with the maps- this is my first BB and having maps + GPS + traffic information is awesome.

Also, the GPS found my location in seconds- very accurate, too. Again, I'm impressed. Now I'm off to set up WiFi.

GPS is not locked. Though I don't have one, I played with one at an AT&T store last weekend. I downloaded Google maps and had it up and running and found myself with a little blinking blue in under 3 minutes!

Ya I can confirm it as well. My parents both got an 8820. I have been playing with both, and I can say I impressed with the TeleNav software. The traffic re-routing is an awesome feature, as well as the re-routing if you miss a turn. Not to mention the directory services. Looks like no more 411 calls! Lol
