Talk was not as heavy or as long as I have put the 7100 through. I realize it does a lot more and the screen is bigger/brighter etc, but for a business user this BB needs to go a solid day without being charged. When I am away all day, e.g. conference, this will not work and is not practical!!

Any else experiencing this? The screen is great but I think it is a design mistake to make a screen that requires the backlight, i.e. it cannot be seen in good lighting w/o the backlight which sucks down the power.

Ok.....here's your solution. heck i've got two of them for you. 1) extra battery. 2) car charger. Welcome to Next..oops i mean Sprint (not known for goo-gobs of battery life)

oh, and since misery loves company.....i too await with baited breath ( i need a tic tac. anyone have one?), the day when my newly (back)ordered 7100i will grace my desk/hip. Nextel actually even pissed me off, which being the mellow fellow i am is a quite a feat. i knew some people were being told that stock was low, so before i ordered i asked, "do you have any in stock?" the answer was "yes." the guy on telesales took my order and even gave me a ship date, telling me it would arrive, "on or before thursday" (i ordered this past sunday 10/23). i said thank you very much and hung up the phone. i called monday morning to confirm my order because i havent gotten the order info email and was informed they are backordered and "might" get more in this thursday 10/27. ummmmm, ARGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Default Battery Life

This seems like a dumb questions but how do you charge the extra to have it ready to go? I have seen a wall charger for just the battery. I guess that will be another device to travel with. The location for the charger input on the BB is not convenient on the left side for charging and talking while driving unless you are driving a car with the steering wheel on the right hand side!

Does anyone have experience with the extended battery? Is it available for the 7100i and where is a good place to purchase it online? It would be better to have one battery that can go the distance all day versus the hassle of keeping two charged, changing batteries etc.

Building a device for business that can't get through a single day seems archaic with today's technology and demands. I remember having to do things like that years ago when cell phones were bigger and didn't manage power well, etc.

Seems like BB needs to do a focus group with road warriors as part of their product design cycle!!!

Thanks to all!

Thanks Dawg -

I though LiIon batteries did not have a memory or need conditioning. Can you share the procedure - i.e. do I let it run out, recharge, how many times, and how long on the charger?

Thanks!

Have spent the weekend and a few days with the 7100i and so far my only complaints:

a) The case is extremely difficult to clip to your belt

b) Miss the shortcuts - especially to file messages

The Suretype has not been as big a deal to me. Amazingly I think I am almost as fast on the new keyboard after only a few days practice.

When I make mistakes on Suretype it is much more obvious because if you are off one keystroke the device guesses at the wrong word - so it's more obvious that you've made a mistake.

If I've spent any amount of time swearing at the 7100i then it is purely over the lousy fixed clip included with the case.

PS - I upgraded my 7520 to 7100i by logging into Nextel and clicking on the upgrade phones.

Thanks to all!

Dawg - do you have a 7100i? What are the specs and consensus on battery life for the 7100 over 7520? I thought the 7100i specs had showed longer life.

If you have a 7100i can you share your settings, like backlight that may have helped optimized your power usage. I think an unfortunate part of the 7100 screen design is that it can't be read without the unit's internal backlight. This means that even in the light of day and in a affoce the backlight must be used. Today I turned mine down to about 52 althought it is a trade-off because it is harder to read.

Thanks again!

i have had my 7100i since the day it was for order, and i have noticed compared to the bigger battery of the 7520 i have the battery life is suprisingly good. im on IM+ all day BB Messenger and sending and recieiving emails as well as talking on phone/DC and by the end of a 12 hr day i still have 70%. One of the things that i am wondering is that i charge mine through the USB cable on the laptop not the travel charger...which is the opposite of what i did with the 7520 and i noticed it charges slower. But if any of you are car freaks too. you will know the best way to charge a battery is througha trickle charger...as far as the backlight coming on all the time i happen to like that since i needed to download BBLight for the 7520 to have it come on when you did something. So that is a good feature. i just have the Back light set to about 45% and if i need more BAM there is a button on the top for 130% brightness...gotta love it

Thanks Eric! My battery is @ 55%, and my 7100i has been off the wall charger for about 7.5 hours. It was on the wall charger for 9 hours overnight.

I am in my office so I have used it for a few calls, vm and DC, but nowhere near what you described. One hour after taking it off the charger this morning I set the backlight to 52%. (Yesterday I was out of the office, unplugged, and I ran out of battery and had to charge the unit 3 times.) Today's performance is better but not a true usage test.

If I could get your performance I'd be more than happy. Are there any other settings or tricks you may use to save power that you can share? I keep the BT radio off and have turned down the backlight. The unit does all kinds of things that I haven't begun to figue out so I'm sure there are other settings to consider.

Thanks - Alex

i would put it on ebay. I got 199.95 for my 7520. sure it was only a month old but all there was what came with, and thats it. Plus, i only paid 169.99 for my 7100i. Not to mention a month ago when i upgraded from my 830 i got $120 off ebay for that. with a few extra accessories.

Just recieved my 7100i after running over my 7250 :( ... after a few hours the main difference is this.

7520 is a great blackberry PDA with phone sort of added on.

7100i is a phone with blackberry pda included.

Thats proabably an over simplification, but so far I'm loving the 7100i. My 7520 was sweet, with its full keyboard and its daylight readabel screen but it lacked many modern phone features, like real ringtones, differert ringers per person etc etc etc...

This is all the goodness of a real modern phone with the benifits of the blackberry pda and mail. The only sacrifice is the keyboard which takes some getting used too, but isn't unusable.

7100i = some good. Now if I could only get the bluetooth to sync with my Apple Powerbook... it would be a perfect.

I use my phone all day, heavy internet use, Ramble, and BB Messenger, I have had it for 2 days now and I haven't had it below half way. Works well all day for me. As for sure type, it's nice once you get used to it. I love the phone and wouldn't ever go to back to my 7520.
