As far as I knew, if you change BB you change PINs. It is serialized to that individual BB. Well that is what I read...I'm sure someone will have the correct answer. (Holds the door open for Dawg)..........................................

For now though, I think the two batteries is the way to go!!!

Thanks stlpilot!

Where did you buy the wall charger and battery?

Nextel RTS told me they will give me a new battery in case mine is defective. My real problem might be that the reception in my office and house is spotty and that eats power. My previous phone i85s did fine though with an extended battery every day.

Does anyone know if those cell phone signal amplifiers for home, boats etc. will work with iDen. I think iDen is 800/900 MHz. Will an amplifier made for that frequency work for Nextel?

Thanks ACM

I got a 7100i on Friday. It's my first integrated BB/Phone, but I've been using a RIM957 for 3 years. I was getting tired of carrying the 957 around separately, and I'm on my 2nd one (first one had scroll wheel go bad) and the screen is starting to go bad on this one. We don't buy 957's anymore at my company and I've never liked the size of the existing Nextel BB's, so the 7100i seemed like it would be a good fit.

So far I have mostly positive feedback. A few of my peeves

1) Screen goes off quickly and when out of holster - would like to see it go to dim back light after X timer, then off after another timer. Would like to be able to keep it on when cradled
2) DC calls don't stay on the screen long enough. I'm coming from i90/i830/i930/i836 and when someone DC's you, it stays in that mode for a pretty long time. On the BB, it's in DC mode a really short time. Sometimes I can't get it out of the holster and press the button quick enough. I realize it probably does this because it can't be in DC Mode and receive e-mail, but I'd like it to be longer.
3) In holster vibe settings for messages and DC are the same 2 vibes, can't tell what's what. RIM really needs to let you change this.
4) No shift button on the left hand side - taking some getting used to.. keep hitting alt when I want shift!
5) Condensed keyboard means less special characters on the keys - takes longer to get some of them out of the symbol table. As I type more, I suspect I'll start to remember which keys are which symbols in the table and it will be quick

SureType works fairly well for me. I find that I have to just not think and let my fingers walk and I can type just as fast. If I'm thinking "where is that letter" then I get hung up trying to find it on the condensed keyboard. I don't actually type on my BB alot to send mail, so I'm happy with it overall.

I just upgraded to BES 4.0 SP3 after reading about BT Sync in page 1 of this post. I'm going to get a Belkin bluetooth Dongle tomorrow and see how this works Monday. I'm glad to have read this thread. This will get rid of my last peeve about ever going to a BB Phone...getting e-mails to handheld while I'm at my desk, and I won't have to cradle to do it!

1 quick question:
-Anyone seen a nylon or leather holster with a swivel clip but NO flat? The nylon/leather holster Nextel sells is perfectly acceptable in terms of holding the device, but the huge clip on the back is horrible. Extremely difficult to put on a belt, and you can't slide it down a belt, which I do all the time when I get in/out of the car.

From the "Internet Browser" go to the option for Nextel Website. Once there, go to option 1 for "download applications". From there, go to "Free/Demo Applications". Once there, it will be option 3...Yahoo Messenger for Blackberry 7100i and others.

I hope that this helps, and forgive the late reply.

Hi splacko and everyone else,

I have been searching the forums for "7100i" and "SMS", "MMS", "text message" and haven't been able to find out how well this works for people. I have a 7520 and will gladly switch over if:

1) I can receive Text/SMS with the headers telling me WHO sent the message. I heard this is possible and the few posts about this subject seem to confirm this but does it show the name of the contact if you have it in your contact list (just like a regular phone) or just the phone number?

2) Can you respond to an SMS now? I heard this is possible with MMS but I didn't see anything that confirms this fact. Is it seamless like regular text or do you have to kludge it together? Right now when I receive a text message, I enter their number in IM+ as an AOL contact using the number (e.g. +13035551212) to respond. Sometimes I use Teleflip, too, which works fine, but I would just like to indulge my geek side with true text capabilities.

Thanks in advance for the input. This is probably the main feature that is keeping me from switching and just wanted to hear from people who use SMS/Text.

Default First Impressions 7520 -> 7100i

In no particular order:

Pro
  • Screen much clearer, allows much smaller fonts
  • Much better form factor and weight
  • Some programs even better on 7100i (Telenav, PocketDay)
  • Can Bluetooth synch with the PC.
  • Bluetooth headset volume seems better
  • Pushing escape key on right side no longer hangs up by accident
  • Walkie-Talkie button now on left side
  • Multiple Themes and more ringtones, downloadable too
  • Rings much louder

Con
  • Seems substantially flimsier built. Dropped my 7520 a lot, not sure I want to do that w/ the 7100i ...
  • No more keyboard shortcuts for apps, but does have designated phone and hangup key as well as a "convenience" key one can program for one app
  • Cannot just type name on the phone screen and automatically switch to address book any more. Have to search for phone numbers directly in address book now ...
  • Speakerphone a little more tinny than 7520
  • Despite the hi-res screen, app icons (or list items in alternate theme) are huge and one has to scroll a lot. Smaller icons would easily fit 20 or so apps on one screen! Maybe someone will come up with a theme for that!

And
  • My main concern was the Suretype keyboard. I don't seem to have problems with that as the keys are much bigger (I have big thumbs) and the keyboard guesses quite well
  • Battery life similarly dismal to the 7520. Anyone know of a hi-capacity battery?

I really like the 7100i. One has to give up a few things for no reason (like keyboard shortcuts, address book integration with phone) but .... no pain no gain I guess

If it wasn't for the suretype, i don't think i would've bought the 7100i. But, is there a way to have the suretype enabled all the time? Seems like after a while it disables.

I was told yes, at the store but you have to use a cable, can't do it with bluetooth.

You globally set if you use SureType of MultiTap. In certain areas, the devices automatically goes to different modes in certain typing situations: MultiTap (when you need to type passwords for example) or it goes into locked number mode (when you need to type in phone numbers in contacts for example),

I think you might be hitting the * key and holding it and not realizing it switches between SureType/MultiTap. I know I've done it a few times.

The 7100i has it's share of bugs, so you may have ran into one. Since it's the first device to use OS4.1, this is to be somewhat expected. I thin (hope!) that a LARGE number of them will be fixed on the next OS update.

To reply to Martin's post #23 the 7100i does not support wired earpieces with the outer ring for PTT. I tried my wife's earpiece for her i830 and the earpiece and the PTT button didn't work.
