Default Newbie Begging For Help

Please Login to Remove!

Okay so I'm new to the whole blackberry scene and I know nothing. I have a Blackberry 7100x which I bought new off ebay and I have an o2 Sim Card on the 02 network (uk).

I know realise it isn't as simple as all that

So I called my service provider and they didn't seem to have a clue what I need to do either, big help there! Basically I want to be able to surf the web and receive emails.

1. Does this have to be done through m,y service provider or can a third party company provide this service, like the blackberry internet service?

2. Can I use it to syn with my desktop email client even if I don't use it to send emails via the radio network?

3. How in gods name do I transfer files to my blackberry with the usb data cable?

Thanks all

1) BlackBerry Internet Service or number 2.
2) If you have Outlook and are using a Hosted or non-hosted BlackBerry Enterprise Server account.
3) You can transfer apps, games and themes using the USB cable and Desktop Manager.

and I'd be right in thinking that whether or not I used BIS or A hosted Blackberry server I also need a data plan which only my phone provider can supply?

If I use the desktop software without BIS or without a blackberry server I can still use the BB to sync emails off my pc from outlook client?

I have tried the above but can find any of my emailks on the device?

you can't sync your emails - either on BIS or BES

your phone provider needs to add a BlackBerry Data plan - i'm assuming your provider is O2

That's right I'm with 02.

I should have looked into this before buying the handset but it was a bargin, lol

I just can't belive that I can't do anything without a data plan, and bis or bes. Even something as simple as copying my emails from my pc to the handset via usb, are these things good for anything!

I can't even transfer a .jpg file across via the usb cable. The only options I have in the software is to backup/restore or load an application.

I havn't ever been able to do this and tried everything under the sun, I believe this is a secuirty feature. If you search this has been talk about before, a Colleague wrote a Java app that pulls the e-mail out of a Backup file from the Emulator but only works on export not import.

You could always use the Emulator and do Backup and Resotres from that to get App's and img's onto your Device. Kind of a work around but does work and a pain in the BUTT.

The Emulator takes time to setup but is a nice thing to play with. Some times I find myself loading my backup into it just to play or check stuff. Handy when you are on a plane or somewhere you can't have a cell phone.

To send a picture to your BB photo application, email it to your phone's address.

I couldn't agree more, I should have researched exactly what the blackberry had to offer. However, in all fairness it isn't a huge leap to assume I'd be able to sync my desktop email and use gprs to connect to the web (as I can do this on any other phone on the planet).

I can see now why blackberry has limited appeal and why windows enabled devices are the market leaders.

I'm expecting a phone call today from my mobile network provider about data services but last night I was told that they only offer business contracts for blackberry, as do most other UK providers.

Thanks for all the help guys.

All I know is that the sales person I called yesterday advised me that the only way to connect a blackberry to the 02 network is via the business contracts department.

I just can't believe how much hassle this is going to be, lol It was meant to make my life easier

The Blackberry isn't a phone it is a PDA first then, oh ya you can make calls also; Not the other way around.
