Does anyone have this working on their Bold. I called customer service and they said the Bold was not a supported device.

UMA is currently not in the firmware. Rumour has it that it is supposed to be supported in an upcoming firmware upgrade. I'm waiting for it also.

as far as ive been told... rogers wont support UMA on business handsets as the talkspot servie itself isnt available to business users, or available as an add on to any business priceplans.

ive seen crazier shifts tho, so ill wait and see

I don't see the usual modules in the loader firmware directory, not for .126 or .134. This means that there is no UMA for any Bold device no matter who the carrier as far as I can tell. I just hope mobile_pheen got bad information. UMA is badly needed.

Let's not mixup Firmware from the Software OS. The firmware is hardcoded into the device. The Software is the Java Modules that get loaded.

In the 8820, the Rogers device had UMA support in the hardcode firmware but the 8820 for ATT did not. This meant that even if you installed the 8820 Rogers OS onto the ATT 8820, one would not get UMA support...even though the OS had the modules for it.

It is possible though that the FIRMWARE already has UMA hard coded into it but the current OS simply doesn't have the modules to unlock that part of the firmware.

Only someone with access to the "production" version of the engineering OS could tell us for sure though as this allows the user to add / remove UMA functionality as it has on past devices.

It was my understanding that 3G and UMA do not play nice together - like not at all - rather than a service provider playing puppet master over how we can use our handsets. Are there other 3G devices with wi-fi that support UMA currently in use?

I find this hard to believe only because later in the year if, and I say IF, tmo releases their version of the Bold with 1700 / 2100 for their 3g network they will have to support UMA for their @home service they offer. Now, does that mean that the tmo bold will have 1700 and uma compared to the Bold versions released now is the question... either way for tmo to release this device and not support their @home service would be quite stupid if you ask me. Hopefully they are not thinking the same as Rogers where the @home cannot be added to business phones cause I know they are a LOT of people who want this phone for business use just not going through an actual business to use it.

Not necessarily. They could release it even though it doesn't support their @home service. It would give a reason to keep the other devices in the lineup.

True, never really thought of that one. I am wondering if it would be possible for carriers to block UMA on business plans (as mentioned) yet enable for those of us on non-business. I am sure this wouldn't be hard and with a phone so hyped by everyone I see UMA as a very key ingredient to the phone for customers - surely they cant assume everyone who wants a bold will be using it through their actual workplace.

Either way - while I was considering the bold and using it on edge only I have rationalized that my 8120 is more than fine until (if I should say) a tmo bold comes out with 3g freqs and uma.... crossing my fingers. Although by the time that could actually happen I am sure there will be something new which blows the bold away - just think a year or so ago and what we had available.

I was reading through the features and specification on the blackberry.com website and they stated the Bold/9000 was one of the phones capable of UMA/GAN like the 8x20 series devices.

I have also noted, as a Bold user, that I have had my phone call disconnected when transitioning from the 2G network to the 3G network. This seems odd since what I have come to understand about the UMTS network is that data is the only part that is 3G and the voice is still GSM over the 2G network, thereby allowing simultaneous voice and data service.

If there is a 2G to 3G hand-off problem then, I suspect there would be one switching from GSM to WLAN/VoIP which is why it is not enabled. I hope this is temporary and will be fixed in the future (possibly after the full North American and European releases.)

Please take this information as just items of interest found in the usual random ways with no specific technical backing.

Here is the technical backing. Look at the UMA/Gan section of this document. Rogers can support it. I don't see why they wouldn't because it's a bonus to them. They let you use YOUR infrastructure (Wifi network) to offload their data network of this traffic and charge you a monthly fee to do so. Sounds almost criminal but I need it because of the absence of cell signal where Wifi can happily fill in.

Santo, just want to point something out... that document you just listed does say yes blackberry can support UMA but if you look further down it doesnt say that all the wifi devices support UMA, i says all the blackberrys with wifi, and when you click on the bold there is not where in the features or specs that say the bold has the ability to use UMA... not a single carrier in the world has UMA on the bold as its not technically possible...

For now this is certainly the case. And rather than reiterate what I wrote earlier in the thread, I encourage everyone to do a simple Google search on UMA and 3G. You will quickly uncover that there are software companies working on the solution, but that there are none available to the public yet – neither for a 3G Blackberry device nor any other 3G device. I’m not crazy about Rogers business practices either a lot of the time, but in this particular, instance they really are not to blame.
